Captain Fantastic followed me home yesterday. It's my second pinball and my first EM. I needed a new project because I ran out of things to fix on the Paragon machine I bought in January. This one will keep me busy for a while. I'm going to do a complete restore on this one. I know this machine isn't rare, but to me it's an icon; it's Americana, it's history, it's art, and it's fun. It's also one of the last EM pinballs made in large numbers, right?
The cabinet is in decent shape. No major gouges or holes. The coin door is in good shape. The white paint is now yellow, but otherwise graphics look good. Interesting note, the coin slot is labeled "2 DM", which I guess could be "Deutsche Marks", so maybe this game was exported/imported? I've found no other indications. Another point of interest, the serial number stamped on the head does not match the one on the lower cabinet.
The back glass is near perfect, just two small dings in the upper right corner.
The playfield is filthy and has some serious wear in spots. However the worst of it is in the solid blue sections rather than areas with more complex graphics, so I'm hoping the needed touch up work will be within my abilities. (I'll also consider a CPR repro).
The game starts up and plays. Lots of playfield lights are not working. The flippers work, but are weak and buzz loudly when I hold them. I started a 4 player game to check the score counters, but now every game is four player, even though I only press the start button once and the single player light in the back glass is on, so something is stuck. The player #2 score has something wacky with it. I haven't watched it closely enough, but somehow the score is getting too big, like the 10K wheel is firing when it shouldn't.
What is that super annoying buzzer mounted in the cabinet near the tilt mechanism? I think maybe it comes on when the score rolls over 100K ? Wow, it sounds horrible and I'll have to do something about that.
What does the solenoid on the coin door do? When is it supposed to be on? Mine seems to be locked on during a game.
