SEASON 3 - Weekly Game Challenge #1 - Dig Dug!

My god, I suck at Dig Dug. I'll have to put some time in tonight. Currently at 18k!! I'll limit it to 3 tries for a decent score.

This will give you the basic idea.
Drill a hole down and then come back up on a rock once you have let monsters follow you.
Then exit the opposite direction you came in.
For example i drilled in from the center of the screen at the start position and when I dropped the rock I continued going that way (dont go back the direction you came in).
The monsters will try to get away from the falling rock, but follow you at the same time and go down and get stuck.
I.E. you can drop a rock on a group of them.

Theres actually fairly good example of this in the attract mode.

Fifth picture is my score today. :D

Nice! Thank you for posting.

I've used those strategies, and my best is still 149k.... then again, I don't have it set on "Easy", either. I have it set on Factory Default(Medium). The rest is how I have mine set, 3 Lives, 10/40/40.

That is how I have mine and is one of the settings aurcade has. I guess it can be marathon-ed though.

I honestly dont know if mine is set on easy or medium. Ive never reset the dip switches, but the bonus lives are 10/40/40 like in the description.

If you hit the test switch inside coin door it will say rank = A|B|C|D. A = easy, B=medium, C=hard, D=expert

I finally have the basement somewhat back together so I can register a score before tomorrow. My HSS works so I am just south of 100k.

Does the different rank (game setting) actually make the game perform differently or does it just change the values for when you get extra lives?
Banning has two of them on the floor. One is set this way and one is set where its a higher point value to get extra lives. Ive played both of them, but don't remember one being harder than the other, just that it took more points to accumulate lives.

bonus lives and game difficulty are two different settings:

Huh, I just realized it appears the difficulty looks like should be set to *Medium

I did a quick google search for Dig Dug Dip switch settings and found link to MikesArcade.com

https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi?action=url&type=dip&page=DigDug.txt

That list shows default at *Easy

I just went back and scrolled through the pages of manual here on KLOV and looks like it should have been *Medium

I checked both Atari and Namco dips here even:
https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/spies.cgi

Although, now looking at the coin setting set to 1 coin = 2 plays ....looks incorrect as well

Well, next time if anyone sees that discrepancy please speak up :)

I plan just to go from what the manual says as default. Guess I will need to dig into the scanned manuals from now on instead of other possible mistakes....

May I suggest an "ON DECK" system? One where the next game to be played will be put "ON DECK" to allow folks to discuss the game. That would give players time to discuss DIP setting discrepancies, tactics, etc... BEFORE the game hit?

Example... this week post TWO games...

THIS WEEKS GAME: Donkey Kong

ON DECK FOR NEXT WEEK: Ms. Pac Man

... then next week...

THIS WEEKS GAME:
Ms. Pac Man

ON DECK FOR NEXT WEEK:
Tempest

It would be nearly twice the work for the first week... but then it wouldn't be much more work from then on...

EDIT: Absolutely hilarious misspelling caught and fixed...

What?!? This means we have to be organized!! hehe

Woot!

We're also shooting for doing a 'live' virtual tourney either next Friday December 29 or Saturday December 30, maybe even BOTH! I'll post link to thread once I confirm schedule with orangewhip.
