\'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

I saw a post where someone said that their pinball backglass was peeling but they 'sealed' it before too much flaked off...Any idea on how to do this (or is it total BS?).

My Qbert glass is flaking a bit and I'd love to arrest the situation before it gets worse.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

Krylon Tripple Thick. There is FAQ out there some place where a guy walks through a couple of techniques for sealing up a pinball back glass. You can spray it on to seal it up or go through a method where you lay it on somehow with plastic wrap (to keep from blowing flakes away with the spray). I did it on my Berzerk...worked great!! BTW, use the Tripple Thick and NOT the other clear spray from Krylon. The FAQ talks about it. Something about the formulation of the non Triple Thick stuff that can damage the paint. I don't recall the specifics.

That the one I read / used.

Another vote for Triple Thick. I've used it with a flaking Genie backglass. Sealed it up and to this day is still perfect.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

Yeah just basically cover/tape off all the clear glass area and coat the rest with triple thick. Depending on the degree of delamination/cracking you can also touch up areas. I brought my badly delaminated qbrt bezel back from the dead. Other than the fact that I was a little off on the yellow color match you almost can't tell that it was worked on at all. Krylon triple thick is a must for all of your glass arcade parts.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

Great post....I just received a marquee where the seller put strapping tape across the back of the marquee (4 strips) to hold some packing material. Needless to say I managed to remove 3 strips successfully but the last one took off about a dime size piece of the artwork near the edge.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

If you cant find triple thick at your local store (mine didnt have it) be careful as not all the spray on clear coats are actually clear. some are...whats the right word, hazy. Or misty. I bought the 2 different kinds my store had and one came out fuzzy, and the other was crystal clear. So, test first.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

I ruined a fairly nice baby pac marquee with triple thick. I followed all the faq's out there but have no idea what happened.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

When I did mine I didn't tape the score windows, I cut a piece of cardboard, slightly larger than the size of the window, and put it on top weighing it down with a few big nuts. If the glass is failing tape could pull up some of the art if you aren't careful.

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

I've used this too for some pinball glasses including a few that were new old stock in nice shape to protect them from future damage...key is to spray several light coats from at least a foot away...if you want to touch up match the best you can then remember to put a similar color over your touchup so when lit up it won't be as noticable...usually eithe white or silver for pinball backglasses..most video games its white...however some are silver/grey..

Re: \'Sealing\' peeling backglass?

I've used triple thick on many pinball glasses and love the results. I do it on pretty much every game I restore now. I was reluctant to use the cling wrap method but swear by it now. I like to use heavy coats though. I really lay it on and it comes out nice. Just be even with the spraying.

It's got to be hard to get the spray angle right while straddling the glass to get those nuts in the right spot.
