How is the rubber mat on the step attached? Is it glued, stapled, both?

I'd like mine to be as close to original as possible, but mine was so full of random nails, staples and glue, that I can't tell what was original.

Mine had glue only, no staples (or nails). It also had an "edge protector" - a 3/4" piece of light gauge angle that was held on with 4 nails in the front. I think this must have been an original piece, due to the fact that the nail holes were all equally spaced (can't see an OP being that meticulous, lol). I replaced it with a piece of aluminum angle stock that I attached with screws in the original nail holes.

Cool. Thanks for the reply, Greg. Glue it is then. I ended up using a marquee bracket from some unknown game for my edge protector, since the original was long gone.
I'm also just flipping the rubber mat around since you can't see the bad side once the step is in position. I read that someone else did that. Was that you?
I didn't get as crazy with my restore as you did, yours looks beautiful. I just sandblasted and painted the periscope handles and coin door, repainted the step, and cleaned up the game as best I could.

No, not me. I completely replaced mine - you can get that material at Lowe's fairly cheap - I bought enough to do my Sea Wolf as well as my Pole Position cockpit for under $10. But flipping it would be under $0, so I guess that's the cheapest option. :)

Good luck with your restore, and post some pics when you're done.

It was me that flipped the rubber mat around. It looked like brand new on the side that was never exposed. I also glued mine down, and stapled it as well. Then I painted the staples black so you can't see them. Its still holding fine. I did a partial resto on mine as well. Hell I'll never win restored game of the year that's for damn sure.

I knew I read that somewhere on here. That works pretty good if you can't find a replacement.

I'll have to look at Lowe's again. I'd like to replace mine, but was going to just flip the orginal mat since I couldn't find any matching stuff locally. I picked some up at some point but the ribs on the mat were much bigger than the original and didn't look right. Yours looks like an exact match.

I ordered some online a long time ago but forgot where I got it. I used it on BZ too. And stop posting about a resto without putting up pics you heathen.

Heathen, he says. :D

The only camera I have is my cell phone camera which takes mediocre pictures at best. I never think to stop and take before or during pics, so I only ever have after pics. That does not make for a good restoration thread.
I need to get a camera and just leave it in the garage. Maybe then I'll start documenting what I do, and be less of a heathen.

Look in the section where they have that wall of massive rolls of stuff like plastic carpet runner and stuff, near the carpet. That's where you'll find it. You tell them how much you want and they'll cut it for you. Pay by the foot. And yes, I used it for my BZ and pole position cockpit also. The stuff is a perfect replacement.

I didn't realize the step had an edge protector. The wood itself sticks up as a means to protect the edge of the mat, so I figured that's all there was protection wise. I'll have to look for screw holes. I don't remember noticing them before.

And yes, you know we klover's love sea wolf restores so if you don't post some up soon we might have to try to get you temp banned to learn your lesson. ;)

Well, went to both Lowes and Home Depot at lunch and struck out at both.
I'll try one of the other Lowes in town later this week.

I know I had some left over, let me dig it out, and if it's enough for another step I'll send it to you for the cost of shipping.
