Ok, after replacing the chip sockets, this thing is working beautifully. the only question I have right now is the lights that light up after a hit (the orange explosion). Are the supposed to light up after EVERY hit? Or only after a hit that aligns with one of the lamps?

I have hooked up the light test connector and all the lights work fine. However, only sometimes do they light up on the screen when I get a hit.

This is the only question I have left with the game, so I can deliver it once I'm sure it's working properly...

Every time you hit a boat the explosion should go off. You may have blown one of the transistors (q101-q108) that power the explosion lamps. If one of those trasistors go then you lose 4 of your explosions.

Apparently that would be independent of the functionality of the lights, correct?

Okay, I'll check those out. Thanks...

The test jack just takes 14v off the transformer to power all the lights and you use that to adjust the mirror so the explosions line up with the two rows of ships. It does not actually test any outputs on the logic board.

Q101-108 are what power the lamps during the game and it's not uncommon for them to fail from what I understand.

Happen to know their part # so I can take some home if I need to?

Well, I checked them all and they all measured good in circuit, but a few had cold solder - obviously from poor soldering when they were replaced at some other time. I fixed all the solder, but there was no change in how the lights function. A few light up when a ship is sunk, but most don't give a light after a sinking.

Went through and replaced them all (2N4403's and 2N4401's where appropriate), but still get the same thing....
