Sea Wolf: Any interest in a custom Sea Wolf test rom?

When my Sea Wolf wasn't working, I used the Space Invaders test rom. It leaves a little to be desired when used on Sea Wolf though. It doesn't test the lights, and of course the screen text isn't ideal for Sea Wolf.

I have my game working now, but nonetheless it motivated me to alter the SI test rom to make a program that is ideal for Sea Wolf.

Is anyone interested in this?

Some ideas I had:

  • Test explosion and periscope lights (this is a given) - done
  • Decode the periscope inputs to give a better indication of position - done
  • Named inputs rather than just numbers - done
  • Press torpedo button to repeatedly play the current sound or light the current bulb rather than auto-cycling through them. - done
I'm open to comments on these ideas or other ideas you may have.

Also, if you have a burner and are interested in test versions, let me know (or you could also test in mame if you want). Otherwise I'll probably only post when I have an "official" release.

Attached is version 2.0 of the Sea Wolf test program. Please let me know if you make use of this! Instructions are in the zip file.

If you don't have a burner, steph at www.hobbyroms.com will burn the chip for you I'm sure, and I doubt it would cost much.

Test ROMs for Seawolf would be great. Although I don't have a Seawolf, any diagnostics help for those bronze age games is great.

agreed. i don't have a sea wolf at this time, but plan on getting one one of these days, and with my previous sea wolf experience, test roms would work great.

Sea wolf

I have one and would be interested in a test chip

I would buy a test set as I do plan to get a Sea Wolf someday.

I got the first pass done and it's attached to the first post if anyone wants to try it out. I have files for burning and for mame. All lights are tested in this version. :)

That's great!

How do you use it? Can I burn it on a 2716? Where does the chip go on the board?

Sorry for not being clear enough. I updated the instructions in the zip file, but yes, assuming your board is strapped for 2716's you can burn a 2716 and place it in ROM socket H (no need to remove the chip in G).

That is awesome I would be interested in getting one. Any way to make this game freeplay capeable. Everyone of the seawolf's I have owned and currenty own always have a coining
issue at one point or another. Thanks for any future input.

Version 2.0 is ready and attached to the 1st post!

Enhancements:

  • Decode the periscope inputs to give a better indication of position
  • Named inputs rather than just numbers
  • Press torpedo button to repeatedly play the current sound or light the current bulb rather than auto-cycling through them
Bug fixes:

  • I didn't test the "bad ram" code in version 1.0 and it was faulty. Corrected in 2.0.
I don't have any intention of doing more work on this. But if anyone has any bright ideas, suggestions, or bug reports, please let me know.

P.S. The version 2.0 screenshot takes advantage of mame's artwork feature, which gives the screen the blue/green appearance and displays the explosion and periscope lights. Sweet!

As for freeplay, I have no interest in it since I use tokens in my game room. Sorry!

I think boot hill uses the midway 8080 board. If so, I imagine the SI test program would be beneficial. You can always try it out in mame by replacing the corresponding rom with the test rom.

Ah, sorry, I was so excited I didn't even download the file :D;)

Thanks!

Thanks Dave. Glad it seems this is being well received. Vintage, no I don't have other test roms, but it's possible I'll work on some in the future. It would be based on personal need though, i.e. limited to the games in my game room.

I figured it goes without saying that for those without burners, you can have someone like steph at www.hobbyroms.com burn the chip for you (doubt it would cost much), but who knows? Some people might not know so now you do. :) (updating first post to add this comment)
