Hey I just got finished rebuilding a Centipede for my wife and the screen burn is less than good on it.... Has anyone ever put the brightness up to an acceptable level and put window tint on the crt glass.... Just wondering if this will cut down on the burn you see when you play..... Thanks Matt

A tube swap is the best solution, but there's a cheap one too; most places like Wal-Mart sell a tinted window cling that's intended to shield infants so you'll find it in that department. The advantage of the cling version is that it will contour to curved surfaces that the regular tint film won't.

With the monitor off, clean the surface and then wet it thoroughly with Windex, apply the film and squeegee out the excess Windex.

Carefully trim the edges without allowing the knife to score the glass (bad thing), and you're done.

You'll have to adjust the brightness to compensate for the film.

20 or 15% automotive tint (lower number is darker) will do a pretty good job of hiding burn. It also makes the blacks look very dark. I actually prefer tinted to clear bezels, monitor burn or not.

+1 When I look at my games the ones with clear bezels just don't look right. I keep thinking about tinting them, maybe one of these days.

Just to clarify, I've used the cling film on exposed tubes like Asteroids for example where tinting the bezel instead of the tube would result in losing the detail in the cardboard surround. Centipede is similar in that tinting the bezel would block the blue cardboard surround.

Yea I was going to do the tube itself.... The burn on this one is so bad if you have a good imagine you could play it with it unplugged....lol...

The best window tint I have found so far is "Smoke" from Lowes. COmes in a 12' x 3' roll. I have not tried it directly on a tube, but it works great on the inside of a bezel. It is a grey so it doesn't mess with the colors, just darkens them and it will hide horrendous screen burns. An added benefit is that it makes the blacks really black so the colors pop right out.

Can you give me a brand?

The exact thing that has kept me from trying this. I may try the static stuff on the tube though...
