Well I picked up a Stern cab this weekend and low and behold it plays blind. It's weird because the monitor has neck glow and when I turn it off it does the regular "flash of light/color while shrinking to the center of the screen" thing that all TV's do, but it won't produce a picture at any other time. Does this sound like something a cap kit would fix or is something more simple I'm missing?

Second question: does anybody know what kind of monitor came standard in Scrambles? I checked a PDF of the manual online but it was one of the least informative manuals I have ever seen in my life... so does anybody know the answer off-hand?

Thanks.

A regular CGA (standard-res) monitor should do just fine.

Double check that the video connector is connected at the monitor and the board, and isn't broken somewhere in between. Also make sure all the wires are connected to it properly.

And check that the brightness doesn't need to be turned up, or that the neckboard hasn't come a little loose.

What type of monitor is in there now?

Scramble probably had either a Wells-Gardner 4600 series or an Electrohome G07 monitor.

If it has a Wells-Gardner 4600 in it then the black level pot on the video interface board is bad/out of adjustment. Likely needs a capkit too. You're going to remove the complete monitor from the cabinet to do a capkit in that monitor.

If it has an Electrohome G07 it probably just needs a capkit. However, if it has an original flyback still in it, you should replace it with a new reproduction flyback.

Okay, I messed with the brightness pot and when it's on full brightness I get a full bright white screen, but if I turn the pot even a fraction of a millimeter away from full bright, the screen goes blank. Is this indicative of a bad pot? And if so, does anyone have the specs handy (or a link) to the kind of pot I have to use to replace it with?

Thanks in advance as always...

Which pot were you adjusting, the black pot on the neckboard, or the screen control pot on the left daughtercard?

If that's the pot on the video interface daughtercard then it's BAD (hairline break internally). Usually when that pot goes bad, the monitor needs a capkit too. Zanen Electronics includes the correct replacement trimpot in their 4600 capkit. I think it's a 2.5 k horizontal mount trimpot.

You will need to remove the monitor completely from the cabinet to do a capkit.

I was adjusting the pot on the solder side of the daughter card that has the video signals going into it - I was assuming that that was the brightness pot. If so, I guess it's bad and I may as well do a full cap kit while I'm at it. Thanks for the help, guys.
