scored an atari stunt cycle...a HUO gift from Evel Knievel?

Hi Guys,

Did anyone see this yesterday on Ebay? Don't think it was listed long. As luck would have it, I was checking the seller's forums, saw Pacray's $250 atari stunt cycle..Thought, Hey!! I remember that game! Played it as a little, little kid then most recently at Kmitchell's housecade. Its pretty fun and I thought my sons (2 and 5) might like bus jumping also...checked the KLOV game entry, which of course linked me to this one on Ebay (pix at bottom of link):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170369231245&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:US:1123

It looks like it could be HUO? It had this in the listing description:

The game is a bit dusty, but in great shape and runs very well. All graphics are in excellent shape. This game was originally a gift given by the late Evel Knievel to the late country music star Faron Young. It has a letter inside from Faron Young that gives the information about the gift. Faron Young and Evel Knievel had been friends for years. The game was at Mr. Young's home until he moved and sold several of his personal items.

=============

A gift from Evel Knievel himself? Kinda neat, if it's true :) from the pix, it looks like it may have a slight graphics issue..cab artwork, cp and bezel look pretty nice. Dunno what the heck I was thinking...this was an impulse buy all the way. I'm supposed to be holding out for an Asteroids Deluxe.. Anyways wish me luck, I did the $400 BIN and still have to get this shipped and more importantly, 'Splain this to the wife :p

Any of you guys like or remember Atari Stunt Cycle? We really need a modern day Evel Knievel, heh.

Thanks guys, the cab sounds like it has an interesting story behind it and wanted to share.

A bit dusty? Looks damn clean from the pics. Great score, man.

That thing looks brand spankin' new from the pics, nice score! I am starting to see a lot of these lately, so hopefully I will find one pretty soon. I really enjoyed playing this game when I was a kid.

nice score. love that older stuff. just in case something happens to the controls, I know oregonarcade has an extra cp with handlebars setup on it.

Sounds more like a creative story any good fleamarket salesman would dream up to add value/interest to an item. Sounds like it worked. :) I'm ever the skeptic though, especially with claims like this and HUO claims.

I suppose if you could find pictures of some other things written by that country singer, you might get a feeling for whether the letter was genuine, which might tell you a lot (depending on what the letter says).

You get the letter with the game, right?

Thanks guys. The seller contacted me this morning and said the game works 100%. The graphics glitches in the pix were apparently from his camera. *whew*.

I asked how the game came to be in his possession. He said he got it from a country memorabilia collector friend, who bought alot of items from Faron Young and this was one of them. He said there is a letter from Mr. Young detailing the gift, though its not dated. He's including the letter, but I don't know if there is any way to verify. Wikpedia'd Mr. Young and it said he died in 1996. I'm a sucker for this kind of snakeoil stuff anyways, heh. I told him about my sons and he said he didn't think they'd like it because of the dated graphics... I told him, yeah it probably doesn't hold up against the wii or xbox360 but I plan raising them as arcade Hamish kids..lol.

I haven't noticed the trend, but wouldn't be suprised to see these older games pop up more and more as the owners are probably getting up there in years. We're probably not that far behind. heheh.

You know, I tend to believe the story after looking at the pics of the machine. If someone was going to lie about the origins of a game, they'd have a hell of a time coming up with a machine in that condition that perfectly fit the characters of the story, especially considering one of them is somewhat obscure but believable.

Congrats on the score, I've been an Evel fan since childhood and occasionally look for something legit that I can afford on eBay. Last year there was a gas tank all painted up and the wording of the auction gently avoided saying outright if it was genuine. I asked the seller, it wasn't :-(

Post some more pics when you get it.

Nice!!! Some of my first arcade memories (yeah, I'm old - I actually played this in the arcades back in the day) are from playing Stunt Cycle with friends, seeing who could jump the most buses. I think we got up to the 16-18 range, then it gets treacherous just trying to keep your bike upright through the tubes.

Sweet game - hope it has a safe voyage to your home.

I don't see anything "custom" with the cabinet. It looks like a standard Stunt Cycle.

They just copied that from Wikipedia word-for-word (link).

Whoever wrote that for Wikipedia; I assume it is just their way of saying that the cabinet was designed specifically for the game rather than being a generic cabinet.

If it was a gift wonder why Evel never autographed it, would have only added to the value of the machine, can't believe they let it go for $400.00 considering the story behind it. Assuming you are having it shipped, who are you using to do this ?

You may not be much of a country music fan, but Faron Young actually probably rivals Evel in terms of sheer Star Power. Since it has an autographed letter from Faron authenticating the game as his, it's probably going to hold some value over the years. Faron young was a huge musician who influenced every other name you've ever heard of in country music, Willie Nelson idolizes him for instance.

That may be one of the finest examples of that machine left in the world.

400 was cheap even in a bad economy. NICE DEAL!

I would not doubt that it's for real. The game looks HUO. For that particular game it's pretty unusual to see one in that kind of condition. A lot of cool shit does come up on ebay now and then. Like those Gimix machines used for Robotron development that Scott picked up.

Thanks for the kind words guys :) Here's to hoping I don't get bored with it after jumping a few buses, or worse my kids don't ever take a liking to it. Pretty certain it will occupy a spot for awhile, though..From what I remember it can get fairly addicting the more buses ya jump. What's the max, 32?

I emailed a link to how the graphics should look and the seller said yes it does look like that. In the event it arrives glitchy though, a friend says he should be able to get it running the way it should np.

On the phone, the seller seemed pretty genuine. Dunno why the BIN was just $400 considering the history and condition of the game. I guess its because the game is old-timey. Funny how just 5-7 years makes this "old" compared to our regular old classics, lol.
I'll post a pic of the letter and any other evidence this was a gift from Evel to Faron. I tend to believe it, then again I'm now biased, heheh. Now I'll have to download some of Faron's music and see if I like it...yeehaw! :)

Still have to check with NAVL, but I'm guessing shipping will be around $350. Just used them for a Rampart 3P and it was $318. Once that's factored in, the true cost balloons to $750.

Great looking game and a great story. Hopefully they pack it really nice for shipping. It would be a shame to see that one get damaged. When your kids get tired of it let me know, i will "store" it for you.
