I'm picking up an Area 51 Maximum Force this weekend...it's part of a bulk deal...I didn't have a bunch of time to go over this game individually. I very much remember playing Area 51 and really liked it. I would imagine that this game will lose a little bit of it's luster in a home environment with the continue and all...but oh well

So on the KLOV there's 3 (well 4) Area 51s listed. The original 51, Maximum Force (which I think this one is), a combo (51 and Max), and site 4.

So the question is can I convert this to a combo with a hard drive image change? Or is there other hardware (Eprom\Security Chips) that must be swapped or purchased?

Thanks!

Site 4 is on different hardware than Area 51 and Area 51/Maximum Force. If what you are getting is indeed the Area 51/Maximum Force combo then I don't think there is anything that would make sense to upgrade to.

I'm pretty sure it's just Max Force..

I do see there are a couple different board set styles for the game

Probably should just wait till I pick it up..Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll be the combo

I'm in the same boat. I picked up a Maximum Force with the idea of converting it to the combo and possibly to put one of the solid state drives in to replace the harddisk. So any info pros/cons is welcome.

Did they make a dedicated Max Force?

Mine is a original Area 51...thus if you're upgrading...I would assume you would use the Combo?

(trying to talk myself into getting lucky and having the Combo already)

Yes, they made an dedicated Max Force, along with a dedicated Area 51.
There are the 3 versions of the game:
-Maximum Force
-Maximum Force/ Area 51 Duo
-Area 51

These require their specific hard drive, ROM chips for the PCB and a small security chip.

There is also 2 flavors of the board. One board is a single board and the other has a small daughter card attached to it. The two different style boards are NOT interchangeable.

I know for a fact, when I upgraded from Max Force only on my single layer board to the Duo, I had to swap ROM chips, small security chip and hard drive. Then it worked fine. I then installed the CF hard drive which also had the updated rooms.

I have a Area 51/Max Force duo board and HD mounted on a metal plate, but I haven't been able to test it.

MMAO if you want to take a chance on it. Please keep in mind that the shipping will probably be ~ $20 because of the size and weight of it.

You need the ROM chips and the small security chip off it. The security chip for the single layer board is the hard one to find because it was not reproduced. There is a seller on ebay selling the ROMs and security chip for the board with the daughter card.
Here it is and he also shows the board differences:
