Initial D Version 2 is the best version of the three if you go that route. Of course, the cool thing is you can just buy the discs/chips to have all three versions in the same cab.

1 and 3 penalize you badly for scrapes, where 2 does not.

Race Drivin's are linkable if the eprom's are up to a near final version level and you have the proper cable to link them.
I spent many hours on research and upgrading on the two I currently have to get them linked.
Only bad thing is "linked" is a loose term on these. Even though both drivers can see each others cars on their screen, it's more of a ghost car and you can drive right through each others vehicle without damage. However the realism in shifts, braking, force feedback, etc is awesome. Checkout Jed's (programmer of this game) website. It has video's of the game in action at the bottom of the page of this link if interested in more info on it.

I played the NASCAR drivers at CAX... they look awesome and are damn fun to play too.
