School me on Pengo

I dont think its very walk up and play friendly.. a casual player will have no idea what to do.

personally the game gives me a headache.

pengo

First game I wanted I cant blame on Joe mageria ;)

Played a few years ago at the midwest gaming classic
Found one and restored it .
will be a permanent part of the collection
HIGHLY underrated !

Here's the thing.. with the original popcorn music ROM revision the difficulty scales well and the aggressiveness of the snowbees is balanced. IMO it makes a more rounded game ( for a non-expert player ).

For sure. I wasn't sure if OP was trying to cater more towards casual players that might throw a few credits in Ms. Pac vs those that would want to sit down and figure out the nuances of Pengo. The popcorn version (slow draw) definitely is friendlier.

There's a 1m+ video submission (fast draw) that's just incredible that got submitted to TG earlier in the year. It's a master class and a hoot to watch.

It's my daughter's favorite game on our 60-1. I'd love to grab her a dedicated but we were out of room about six games ago.

Yes, link please.

I've heard there are high-score Pengo players around, but haven't been able to find any vids or discussions on advanced strategies, etc. I might break 100k on a good game, but I would love to know how folks score many times that, as it ramps up pretty quickly.

I top out at around 140K+... Rummor is if you get past level 16, the difficulty returns to level 1. I'm not sure if that's true or not as I haven't gotten past level 16 yet :) I've gotten TO it, but just not PAST it yet.

My guess would be that it just stays at that difficulty. So if you can master that, you can master the game.

One thing I did find is that you start the game from power on BEFORE the attract mode displays a maze, then the first level will always have the same layout. I even developed a pattern on that level to get the 10K bonus every time. I'm not a fan of patterns so I don't use it.

My strategy is to get the 10K bonus if it's easy to do, otherwise just go for the kill and get past the level.

Cool, good to know. Yeah, I don't know if it's explicitly patternable (like Pac-Man), but there are definitely strategies for some of the easier-to-arrange layouts, to get the 10k bonus fairly quickly. But some of them are too complicated, so you've just got to freestyle it.

I think the Snobees' motion has some randomness in it, so explicit patterns aren't possible, but the screens where the blocks are already close, you can usually get the 10k bonus in the first 30-45 seconds or so. But past that, you're on your own. The AI on those Snobees is a bitch though, as sometimes you can count on them to go straight for you, and other times they'll go right by you, which adds to the fun/infuriating factor. It's brilliant programming on the part of the designers.

Does anyone know which version is on the 60-in-1?

It does go back to level 1 difficulty. The mindset is to think in rounds, and performance per round, and balancing risk by level within the round vs. total point output. You should be able to get an average of 10k per level but the end of a round.

I can also confirm that the games does go back and start over at level 1 difficulty after a set number of screens are completed.

I don't know how many screens this involves, but I have done it myself a few times...maybe about 15 screens or so?

16 then loops back to 1.

Not sure how to rip the video directly but here is the submission thread which I think you need a TG account to see.

Yeah, definitely. Especially if you pick up the HS save kit for the game :)

Off topic - but do you still have that Crazy Kong kicking around, or did you end up selling it?
