School me on Donkey Kong.

I saw a red or two bitd, might even have played one but I clearly spent the majority of time on a blue one so that is the one I searched for, bought, and restored to it's original blue beauty.:)

Oh heavens... Have commited another faux pas. I was under the impression that no one liked Radar Scopes and that DK was one of the most popular games ever. I better get to work on converting it back right away. Unless I misunderstood your meaning. I suppose, you could be saying that converting a VS cab to DK was like......
Thats like putting a Jaguar hood ornament on a Honda Civic.

Hey Jam - Good point on the serial numbers. The area of serial numbers from 10K to 30K were the TKG2 games. The uprights were from 10K-19.9K. I think it is very possible that there were less than 1000 in that serial number range. The TKG2 cocktails were serial numbers in the 20K-30K range. I would bet even fewer cocktail in that range than uprights in it's range. Probably less than 1500 games total in both.

My guess is Nintendo didn't even think of selling 10K Donkey Kongs as they could even sell 1K Radarscopes so they started the conversion games at 10K and 20K thinking they would never get that high. When demand deemed they would make more games than expected they choose to skip those ranges.

Murph

Ohhh, I hadn't picked up on that. That makes perfect sense though. So, we may be talking about 3000 red, but less than 40,000 machines, meaning it could be over 10% red.

Did the TKG3 cocktails have a designated serial number range? How about the cabaret?

I don't think I have ever seen a red one, and I only remember playing the blue ones BITD. I would have paid $500 for a decent red one, but I got my blue one for almost half that and that's all I have to say about that. :D

I know when I saw a red one it was after I had played many blue ones and I had one of those "WTF?" moments and said to myself "Why is is in a red cabinet?" That's how acustomed I was to seeing blue cabs. Good to know the story/reason behind it but doesn't change my desire to have a red one over a blue one.

Thanks for the input guys.

I guess I can see how someone would be willing to pay a premium for a special or rare cabinet, but I wasn't really interested in that. I was just looking for a dedicated machine.

For me, I can't see paying a premium for a game just because the cabinet is a different color. It isn't like it has some really cool and different artwork or the cabinet is a different design or it plays any different or anything like that. It's just a different color.

I have come across a few DK machines recently, but everybody seems to want a lot of money for DK right now. I guess it is the current hot ticket machine like Tron was for a while there.

$500 is a pretty good price even for a blue cab DK. It's a GREAT price for a red cab assuming its in relatively good shape. Also, if the board in the red cab is original to the game, the game-play on the red DK should be slightly different. On the early boardsets the barrels won't come down on your head if you're on a ladder and touching a girder (this is the infamous "ladder cheat"). You can choose not to use it if you want a harder difficulty but if others want to play it makes the game a little easier for them.

Mine is 05465 and also TKG3. I think all of the DK cocktails were TKG3, as they all used the 4-board set (when they switched to the 2-board sets in the uprights, they wouldn't fit in the cocktails). The "ladder cheat" ROM only says "Nintendo" on the title screen, whereas the other one says "Nintendo of America", so it's easy to the difference without playing.

In my local area you would not have been able to pick up anything decent for less than $450 just a few months ago, and I probably would have spent the $500 on the DK.

Recently prices have dropped quite a bit around here. I have been following craigslist and local eBay ads, and almost nothing is going for more than $300. The only exceptions are original Pac Man games and (at the moment) original Donkey Kong games.

I have a line on a plain-old blue DK and a Mappy that I am going to see this weekend. The guy wants to buy a turbocharger that I have, so I am thinking that I might be able to work out a creative deal on both.

i don't know how high the serial numbers go for tkg3 cocktails. mine is 00165. i've been under the impression that all the cocktails were tkg3 as they all seem to be the 4 board style.

That's right, the reason I said TKG3 cocktails was to prevent confusion over the tkg3 uprights, but I guess I could have just said "cocktails".

It's weird that yours is serial #165 and doesn't have the ladder cheat. I wonder whether they didn't update the roms in yours or whether your board is not original. A good rule of thumb (that's not 100% accurate) is that TKG3-06 and earlier are likely to have the ladder cheat and TKG3-07 and on don't.

The fact that you've got 00165 and CrazyKongFan has 05465 makes me think they weren't all grouped together.

The highest TKG3 Cocktail so far is 09717. I also have a few cabaret numbers. It would appear so far that they did not duplicate serial numbers amongst the different types of cabinets. Because of this there is not a range for cocktails vs uprights vs cabaret's. They are all intermixed for TKG3.
