I'm getting a ram error message (at 3P) in my Paperboy's test mode. klov'er Modesitt was kind enough to suggest replacing the 6116 ic's on the pcb.

Is a 6116 a catch-all term for all 24-pin ic's, or is it one of many type of ic's available in this size/shape/package? I was thinking that if they are that common, I might as well get a bunch and maybe even replace all of them on my Paperboy board.

Here's a photo of the two ic's in question:

A 6116 is a 2kx8 static RAM chip. It's a particular kind of 24 pin IC. They are fairly commonly used on arcade boards, and good to have around.

Is it a matter of cross-referencing the numbers printed on the ic's to find out what to replace them with?
In other words, I look on the ic's, see D446C -3 and 8626X9204 and one of those numbers means "this is a 6116" or is it more complicated than that?

Is there some resource for cross-referencing online?

If you just Google D446C you'll find the datasheet for that chip.
That'll tell you it's a 2kx8 SRAM made by NEC with the standard JEDEC pinout. It's also a low-power CMOS version (often used on boards with battery backup), so depending on how it's being used, you need to be careful about what 6116-compatible chip you substitute.

Are you saying these are all interchangeable? Or as Matt said, one needs to be careful about the application?

They all have a compatible pinout, but that list is a mix of devices... there's NVRAM in there too. There are some common ones missing too, like 2128.

I picked up 6116's from a local supplier for $1 each, and replaced all four....
