I finally finished my upgrade of my Scared Stiff machine to LED's. It took about 6 hours total and I still have to replace the 555 under the bony beast ramp. I'll have to lift the ramp to do that. My fingers were sore for a day afterwards from gripping those tiny bulbs. I think it looks pretty great. Green LED's under the bones by the outlanes and the red ones in the globes look great as well. My biggest surprise where the blue ones in the pop bumpers. Man they just pop now. I'll start work on her sister, Party monsters next month.

Thanks. I saw a Elvira & the Party Monsters at the NW Pacific arcade show and she looked pretty good with LED's replacing the older 44's. It just seemed to bring new life to the machine. Do you guys have any pic's of your machines?

I noticed when installing the cointakers that trying to install 44s from the top was a huge pain, but if I pulled the socket out from under the PF (one bolt) they went in really easily.

Here is SS that I had with LEDs. I put color changers under the boogie men which looked pretty cool.

I agree, many older pins look great with LEDs. The Party Monsters is an excellent example. I did Black Hole in LEDs which I think matched the theme.

Yes, I found that worked best as well. otherwise, I would have had to pull too many plastics off to get to the bulb. I was thinking of doing something with the Boney beast ribs such as maybe light them from underneath and have it light up with something else on the playfield, but I haven't decided on what yet. the Stiff o meter?
Now to lift the ramp to pull that 555 out from under the skull of the boney beast ramp. No looking forward to that job. Anyone use the LED kit for the candles on the dead heads?

dlhenson, your attack from mars, do you have the colored DMD? I think Scared Stiff would look great with one. Especially the bubbles as green when the ball is drained. Anyone know of if they're going to do any other machines than the current two?

I think BlackMatrix either did or is gonna do the the SS LED candle.

Yes, the Color DMD looks great in AFM. Medieval Madness will be released next week with Addams Family to follow.

Pinball News has a great article on the Color DMD and future plans.

After I did a complete playfield restoration on my SS I totally de-LED my game and went back to the regular 555/47's. I will be doing the same to my MB (Monster Bash), CFTBL (Creature from the Black Lagoon) and TAFG (Addams Family) soon. I found it to be more of a fad thing and it made the game(s) hard to play.

It can make the games harder to play if you do all GI LEDs, and especially frosted or colored GI LEDs. I prefer a mix of bulbs closer to the flippers and warm white LEDs under ramps or behind guide rails where light dispersion isn't as important.

How do you mean harder to play? Distracting from the LED's? I notice that the ball reflects much more light from the LED's now that with the incandescent bulbs. The game seems to run a little cooler in the back box. (however I do have 2 computer fans running in there to get air to move around to keep the electronics cooler).

I think it breathes new life in the machine I've had for over 10 years now. and I probably won't have to change bulbs again ever.

Here's a couple more.

I think your game looks awesome! I really like the green at the bottom as well. I've only done one complete LED conversion and that was on a Medieval Madness last year. I really liked the way it came out but it does make it harder to play with some of the LED's. Especially if your playing the game in a dimly lit or dark room, in a well or natural lighted room it looks and plays fine. (in my opinion) Since then Ive done a few others but not a "complete" conversion. I do a lot of experimenting with different colors and brightness' of the LED's and also leave a lot of the normal lamps as they are. If the LED doesn't seem to make a difference then I leave the normal lamp in place, this goes for the inserts, flashers and the GI's. I just keep experimenting until I get the results I'm happy with. I recently finished a Big Guns with a mix of LED's and normal lamps, I think it came out really well and (to me) the LED's only add accents and pop to the visuals of the game but don't effect the game play.

That play field looks great. I also did some adjusting of the colors and bulb intensities. getting the colors right also was a challenge sometimes. But the Stiff O Meter now looks great. Now on to her sister, Party Monsters.

leds

I put super duper 4 diode leds in my Comet and Firepower. Damn are they bright, will post pics soon.

Changed the way game looks so much, F14 is next.
