I've been searching for "The Shadow" black box and coin door artwork with no luck. One place had blackbox artwork, but doesn't sell it anymore. I might have to just scan what I have.

Would the following portable hand scanner work for scanning blackbox or sideart? Its a portable hand scanner and looks like it would be great to scan blackbox artwork atleast. The beauty of this is it scans the whole length of the blackbox without stopping. No need to stich images like a regular bulky 8.5 by 11 scanner. What do you think?

I had been looking at those for some time now to scan playfields and such and then transfer the output to a graphics program to re-create. TigerDirect has them for about $60. I'm probably going to get one after Christmas and try it out. It looks as though it should work nicely.

I'm going to throw out my opinion, it may be right or maybe wrong.. probably wrong. I don't own one of these and have never tried one...

But a hand held scanner in my opinion will probably not give the best results as your hand is the moving mechanism and you can't keep the same speed as a fixed scanner would be able to do.

That being said, if there is no other solution, something is better than nothing.

Those are a big bag of suck. Good for a document but not art.

with the current resolution of digital cameras, a good DSLR should get you all the detail in 1 picture.. but you have to take care of the lighting setup, don't use internal flash, setup a light from the side so that it doesn't reflect back towards the camera

see here for my tips about photographing backglasses

same theory can be used to take pictures of artwork of cabinets without getting reflections

I went through the same thing with a couple of PFs and a backbox. In order of personal preference- HP4600 scanner (I didn't have one of those) so then- Remove backbox and lay it on scanner and scan in sections. If you are not a fan of doing this, getting a tripod, proper lighting, and a good camera, take a high res digital photo.

Other than that, I don't think I would roll with one of those pens... I looked at one for awhile, but there are just way too many variances when you are doing something by hand like that.

I've never seen a see-through scanner before. I could see using the 4600 for all kinds of scanning. I might have to get by BIL to help. He does graphic art for a living.
