considering scanning a manual or two and was just wondering the best way to approach this. Not sure what dpi most manuals are scanned at to allow them to be enlarged enough to see details ect. Or any other details I should think about before giving this a go. Also where and how is best to submit the file once done so it may be useful to others? I don't have my own web site so I'd just want it to be available where most folks can access it.

Nah, 300 dpi is good, but normally only for schematics or parts diagrams. Otherwise, regular text sheets can be half that.

I just haven't figured out how to scan them and make them NOT a huge file...

What are you scanning in particular? I wouldn't scan unless its really unusual. If unique, then submit to http://arcarc.xmission.com/ the current repository of the old RGVAC spies archives of days long ago.
