Scandia is selling all their classics in Fairfield, CA

Here's a link to the CL ad:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/vgm/1771855812.html

I called the guy. They are asking quite a bit for most of these but some of the broken stuff can be had for a couple bills. Like BZ for instance. "might need a new monitor" he said. Nice guy....said he doesn't want to sell them but they are "upgrading" to the card system so these gotta go.

wants $700 for Millipede (for instance).

Another one bites the dust.

Here's the text of the ad:

We are selling several classic arcade games, most work fine, some need a little TLC. Here is a partial list;
Missle Command, Roadblasters,Vindicators, Defender, Paperboy, Millipede, Centipede, Galaxian, Galaga, Defender Stargate, Emergency Call Ambulance(Daytona 2 cabinet),NBA Jam, 6 player X Men, 4 hoop hots (quite large),Terminator 2, Battle Zone, Astroids, Star Wars, Joust, The Simpsons, Rampage, Pac Man....
Contact for condition and prices, prices will be better in multiples. These games are at a local arcade so you can check them out in action. If interested, call me at (916)712-6810

Well this news sucks. That Scandia is/was the most well rounded arcade in at least a 150 mile radius. Quite possibly the best representation of all eras of games from early 80's to current day that we still have. Guess I'll have to make an effort to get down there within the next week or so before they ruin it for good.

Did you happen to get prices for anything else?

Not sure if their prices have changed but about 6 months back they listed their games for sale and I inquired about their paperboy which I would value at $200 tops due to condition of cab, really loose handle bars and bad burn. I believe they wanted $1500 then. It's possible their prices may now be more reasonable but are likely still far out of the range we would consider paying.

star wars is sold and I know someone who has seen them and said they are all pretty beat(20+ years in an arcade will do that).

I asked about PB and he said it was working and on the floor. I thought he said the price was $600.. I thought he said like $300 for non working games. I sure someone could get a package deal, but its not like any of it is really rare...

This is really sad news. Honestly, only a few of the games I played as a kid are still there. Actually, I think there's only one, the 6-player X-Men. That cabinet and game blew me away as a kid. I'm actually surprised that they didn't sell these games sooner. As much as I love classic games, for business they really didn't do anything. Based on what I've seen in the last ten years, it seems like they were losing money just having them turned on. The classics have taken a turn for the worse. Last time I stopped in there the Paperboy monitor was barely showing a picture and Galaga wasn't even running. I guess if anything I can use the disappearance of these machines to help explain why I own them myself. Where are you gonna go to play these now?

Oh, if anyone's wondering, I think I remember the Simpsons cab being fully functional and in pretty good shape.

While on the topic of public arcades, if anyone's ever in the Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa/Petaluma area, Willkaotix keeps the arcade at Scandia in Rohnert Park pretty proper if you're into shmups and fighters. Also, MUGA on the UC Davis Campus is pretty good if you like fighters/drivers/dance stuff (not my thing personally). Anyone know how Scandia Sacramento is?

So now I know who to bitch at for removing Adams family from that Joint! They used to have a good selection of Pins.

That may have been gone before he started working there. He hasn't been there for a very long time.
Ha no worries - They use to have a good selection of games there. Now its all newer pins with the exception of Terminator. Only one Classic if I remember and a couple multi games.

They also recently switched from tokens to a card based pos.

Hopefully with him running the games, he can put some good pins back in.

It's ok but no classics and maybe just 1 pin if even that. It's good that they are still there but since they are dealing in newer games these days I would say golf land in Roseville has a better selection and number of games. And the Dave and Busters that just opened in Roseville by far has the best selection of good condition, working new titles in the area. Still really no classics in any of these.

Since I've never actually lived in Fairfield, I really don't know the complete history of the scandia there. I have lived in the Sacramento area for the past 10 years or so and my job has sent me between sacramento and the bay area many times. So over the years I've dropped into the Farfield scandia a good number of times. I seem to remember closer to 1999 they actually had very few classic games on the floor. Not sure if they owned them and had them in storage or what the deal was. I distinctly recall them having a mappy with a price tag on it as well as a few other titles for sale. Actually around 99 I thought the place was pretty sad and unimpressive. From what I recall it really wasn't until the last 5 years or so that the classics reappeared and the arcade became very cool. BTW not sure how it's any harder to change classic games to a card reader system than it is to do it to newer games. So I guess I take that to mean the old games don't bring in enough cash.

Old games make ZERO in that arcade. They might drag in $15-30 per MONTH, where a new game can pull that in a day. The cost of the card readers is very expensive, and the older games will NEVER earn enough to pay for the cost of adding the readers. The readers are way more expensive than you can imagine. (~$1000). They can use the floor space for something more profitable and save $15000 in upgrade costs for $3000 worth of games.
