Say hello to my Asteroids project!

Congratulations on buying the best Arcade Game (Vector) of all time. But I'm prejudiced as Asteroids is my favorite.

By reading your comments, you do have a lot of reading and researching to do.

I will tell you this -> The red LED on the deflection board indicates no vector (X/Y) output from the logic board.

Start with studying the schematics and reading repair logs.
Then test the voltages.
Then perhaps reseat the socketed parts on the logic board. Look for bad sockets or tarnished pins. Look for broken tracks or other obvious damage.

Good luck. :) (And Welcome to KLOV)

This is going to possibly sound stupid, but is there a place to find "repair logs"?

You found a link on ionpool. That's a good start.

http://arcarc.xmission.com/Tech/Asteroid%20Tech/asteroidsrepair.html

In Google, just type Asteroids Repair Logs. LOL

Another way is ->

Here on KLOV, pick the Search pulldown.
Go advanced search.
Type in "Asteroids".
Pick only "Technical - videogames - general repair and help".
Read any relevant thread.

If later you have concerns with the G05 monitor, then
So same search but pick "Technical - videogames - monitors".

Also read the B/W Vector X/Y FAQ:
http://www.crazykong.com/tech/bw_vector_monitor_faq.pdf

I believe this to be the sound board. While we are talking about sound, there is only one speaker in the top, there is a hole for a second one, but it's empty. Is this typical on this machine?

It's not for a second speaker. I used it to place my hand up in there to remove the fluorescent fixture by pushing it out, and dealing with cables when putting that fixture back in. You can also use it to hold the back of the speaker if you decide to remove it (it will drop when you pull out the staples!). Probably also just general air flow & bass.

I would also recommend getting better quality caps for everything from Ian Kellog or Arcade Parts & Repair.

I have some useful links in the first post of my recent restore of Asteroids, hope you find them useful.

Here is an option..
Because its gonna be like 3 boards and they are easy to change.

Hit up andrew, http://forums.arcade-museum.com/member.php?u=64461

He usually has rebuilt AR-1's , XY deflection boards and he can fix
the pcb up nice.. and its not as much as you think it is.
it would be cheaper for you , less hassle.
you wont have to hunt down each and every part and risk messing it up if you
are not sure of what you are doing.

I myself am really busy in the month of october due to an extra night job
so i bought a couple of each off andrewb myself.

You earn the right to do this because you have alot of cabinet work to do
and you are just starting out and i wanna see you get your machine goin so you can play it.
I am not sayin you cant fix the boards yourself, its just easier and you can focus
more on the cabinet repair.

i wouldnt bother bondo"ing the back corners..
You need a circular saw with the blade on a shallow setting..
cut the corner off, get 3/4 inch particle board and match a piece.
dont try to do the whole bottom of the cab, with the swelling your cab has it wont match up unless you board sand it in .

I sent him a message so we'll see what he says back. I like the idea of splicing in a corner.

I've got electronics experience, I have a lifesize robotic R2-D2 that I built, but this is sort of a different monster.

Is there an easy way to test a board to verify its working before I spend money on a new one?

Gotta love a good Asteroids thread. :D

I've got a similar project going on right now, myself. I've got a Lunar Lander cabinet(many were converted to Asteroids BitD) that I'm hybridizing to play both games with a few quick switch-outs(CP, PCB, then internal connections).

While I was working on my Pole Position, I pulled the Big Blue out(on the power brick in the bottom.) and a couple of the fuses. After I did that, my g05-801 monitor didn't work any more. That's what I'm working on right now. Cap Kit should be here today, but under advice from others here, I've got to wait until I can adapt my discharge tool so I don't blow out other components. Not sure if I'll get to my local shop tonight, or tomorrow.

Welcome to the forums, and a hobby that will educate you on things you may not have wanted to be educated on. ;)

Got to love the fact he has what looks like a new born baby carrier in the living room and he has the balls to bring a game in, set next to fireplace and work on it there. Hell yeah keep wearing those pants!!!

My wife hated when I brought home a Killer Instinct and set it next to here side of the bed because the garage was full of games....until I started selling my extras and paying the mortgage.

Good luck

I have a 4 month old! When I told the wife about it - I told her i'd like to get it for my birthday (sept 13th) as I love projects. It was the best place I could find!

So my wife thought it was a small one, like a cocktail - and when we got there and picked it up, she said "Please tell me that's not it...."

Alas - pants wearer right here.

Thanks so much for the welcome! Do you have a thread with your Lunar Lander progress? I would love to see how it's going?!

Yeah that is what I figured. First game is the hardest to get them okay with...remember if she starts in on you try to flip a couple games or parts for profit and throw her a nice gift or something she is into and that will calm her down.

I guarantee that once you are done with this one you will be itching for another, then another...all the way until you rationally run out of space...some people even start renting storage buildings and rationalizing that some how it is okay....if that happens you might want to seek professional help. I did not and now my 30x40 game room has over 70 games stuffed in it along with parts....pool table etc. My sickness is so bad that I have also started putting games in the garage and of course I keep looking for more games to buy.

I already want another one. There is an "Operation Thunderbolt" that I have my eye on, but the wife doesn't want another already!

Thats why its easier just to have it show up while she is out and then tell her that its worth X amount more than what you paid and you're just trying to make extra cash.

that worked for me the first few times... now she just rolls her eyes.
