I just picked up a Satan's Hollow and want to do a restore on it. I figure a thread will help me out, and I could definitely use some feedback and suggestions as you'll see.

First, the pictures:

Someone has painted the cabinet black, but painted around the side art. My first idea was to just get some color matched paint and try painting around it, but the more I toss this idea around I don't think it'd work. I just really don't think it'd match very well. I'm leaning towards painting over it and waiting on Rich to come through.

I want to get a new cpo and the GGG joystick as well. Is anyone selling the joystick insert? My joystick seemingly doesn't have the grommet, where can I acquire that?

My hope for this weekend is to get started on body work and probably prime it as well. I'm going to have to cut a new back door while I'm at it as the old was pretty bashed up.

i used citristrip on my qbert 2 weeks ago, it worked pretty good. i had to apply it 2x since some jackhole painted black over the yellow. the first coat only took off all of the black and some of the yellow.

Even if I citristrip it and get the black off, I'm still not going to be in the clear.
I have some bondo work to do, which will need painted over.

Still, it seems like a shame to paint over that original art that is in decent shape.

Thoughts?

Quick update.
I went to home depot earlier with a paint code I found at Game Stencils to at least see if it was close. They don't sell that paint any more and the guy was going to try to mix me up some and do the best he could. I started asking about just bringing this thing in, and how the matcher does it's thing, and he said to bring it in.

I came back home and tried Citristrip first, and it worked great. I only had it on 10 minutes and it even took the red off underneath the black. I guess it worked too well.

I decided to load this thing up and take it in there then. A spot on one side I had magic eraser-ed already looked good so I thought we could get a good match. I've never gotten such crazy looks, and questions from employees and customers. I'm sure it'll give them all something to talk about for a little while. The paint we matched up looked dead on when holding it up to the cabinet. I'm excited to not have to paint over this side art since it is in such good shape.

That is totally saveable. I did it to mine. I bought some red paint that was close. I masked off around the side art as close as I could. I fixed all that need to be fixed, bondo'd and primered. I then used the spray can for the large areas up to the side art. Then took a spray can that was almost empty, popped a hole in it and used an airbrush to repaint all the red inside satan. I retouched the yellow, black and white as well. Then I clear coated the whole machine. It was time consuming but worked out nicely. I'll post pics soon...I only took a few as I was lazy about going back to the house for the camers.

Made a ton of progress last night and throughout today. I had a lot of chunks missing from the bottom front edge and some stuff in the sides. Not to mention 3 holes left over from 2 bolts and a credit button on the front also.

You can also see in this picture how well the Citristrip worked:

I've gotten 2 coats on the cabinet all around, and it's definitely going to take 1 to 2 more coats minimum. The match is pretty close dried, so that worked out well.
The paint isn't completely dry here:

I'm going to hopefully finish painting tomorrow, as well as ordering what's needed to finish the cabinet. For my reference:

Joystick Shell
Joystick Insert
Overlay
T-Molding

The black kick plate for the bottom. is there a source for that? Also my joystick is extremely loose. Where's the grommet for these sticks, and where does it go exactly? I was looking at it earlier, didn't look absent anywhere. Anything else I'm overlooking?

Looking better for sure. Dried color looks good.

Now if only you could play it :D

Find out about that grommet yet?

I ordered just the T-Molding and some teflon casters from Quarter Arcade today. I'm going to wait until later in the week to order the stuff for the control panel.

The matched paint ended up being pretty close, but if you look close in the picture it is off a little. Down the road if I feel up to it I may take a small brush and do the red completely around the gargoyle, but I think it looks ok, and definitely much better than the black beast I had to begin with.

I got the front bolts painted black, and cut a new back door today as well.

The monitor quit working on the ride home, so I need to look into that and see what's going on. I have no glow, and i'm guessing the chassis took a dump as the G07's seem to do.

Anyone know anything about this joystick? Does the spring on the bottom need to be pulled tighter? Is there a grommet?

looks sick dude! grrrreat!
details on the pickup, craigs list?

It was listed on the Cleveland craigslist.
I just started talking about wanting one a couple months ago. Perfect timing. :)
