So my Satans Hollow appears to have to original battery on the PS board. Still saving high scores (amazingly enough), but I would like to replace it someday (adding it to my "to do" list), any suggestions on what to replace it with?

Isn't Satan's Hollow an MCR game?

If you have a battery on the board I'd get it off SO FAST!

Not a suicide battery in the sense that the system will die if it goes flat.

But it's a suicide battery in the sense that it will eventually leak acid all over the PS board and cause a lot of damage.

There's a couple of easy solutions.

You can put an NVRAM in place on your cpu board and possibly do a mod with the +5v line.

Or you can get a 3.6v cordless phone battery, unsolder your battery on the power board, and solder some wires to cordless phone battery mounted in the bottom of your cab. Then put it in a plastic baggy just in case it ever leaks. Problem solved for at least 2-3 years and it just takes a couple of minutes.

Exactly. Its not leaking now but I do want to lose it to prevent a future disaster. Cordless battery it is. Thanks for the tip.

OK, either method works.

The nvram has the advantage of lasting for about 8-10 years and you can pull the boards and disconnect them from the power supply w/o losing your scores or saved settings. It plugs into a socket instead of a ram chip but you may have to do the +5 mod for it to work right. Here's one thread that describes it.

The linear power board hooked to a phone battery is also very simple. You should probably replace it every 2-3 years and keep it on the bottom of your cab sealed up in a baggie so even if it leaks it won't cause any damage.

i yanked the battery off my tron p/s. it was not saving and just starting to leak. still have to do the cordless battery tip. probably just gonna wait and rebuild the p/s and cap the monitor at the same time, as it's a heavy cab and kind of a pain in the ass to get out from where i have it.

Bob Roberts sells the 3.6v batteries for $2, cant go wrong there. Think I will buy a mini project box from Radio Shack and mount it inside the cab for a battery compartment. I like to keep it neat when I can.

Good idea -- I'd get the battery off sooner rather than later unless you like repairing acid damaged boards.

One tip -- if you do go the cordless phone battery route, it works really well if you already have a cordless phone that uses that battery because you can charge it to 100% before you ever put it in the game. That's what I did and it's worked really well for me.

Here's what my setup looks like:

I also just replace it with a 3.6v NiCd rechargeable cordless phone battery....

Is that the black box under the linear power board?

Did you solder it to the back of the board because it doesn't look connected to the spot where the original battery was?

Yep, that black hobby box has the battery inside. The wires are concealed underneath with the wire fed thru from the back. So far its working fine.

Very nice.

Definitely has a cleaner look to it than mine.

But then again, I wanted to contain the battery in a plastic baggy in case of leakage and I wanted to be able to see it for an occasional inspection.

Yours looks like it was designed that way!

Maybe I will try this in the next few months when the weather stays warm and now that I can solder!

(talking to TRON PS: "hang on baby, just a lliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle longer!")

Forget the battery and use NVRAM. That way even if you take the boards out you still save your high scores.

Yep, Bob Roberts tiny little $2 battery. I also added quick disconnects which are also inside the hobby box.

nice looking job! i was gonna go the bob roberts route, but i was in my local rat shack and they had 3.6v batteries on clearance for $1.99 so I picked one up and threw it in my tron.
