I just picked up a Playchoice 10 and the upper monitor is acting strange.

Every five seconds or so you hear a snap! or pop! and the screen jumps.
I ordered a cap kit,
but just now the bottom monitor started doing the same thing.

I checked the voltage and it seems steady.. anyone else experience this
phenom?

Thanks

Try cleaning the flyback anode leads and surrounding areas. Sounds like your HV has made a resistive path to gnd through dust and debris. Check to see if you can see where it's arcing (from the back) when you hear the popping noise.

Thanks Greg,

I thoroughly cleaned around the anode, and inspected for visible sparks. That puppy looks shiny new. The spark/pop is not visible but it seems to be coming from somewhere on the chassis.
I would even say its more like a clicking sound.

hmmm

Yeah, It could also be cold solder joints on the flyback itself. Which you may not be able to see because its hard to see the solder side of the chassis with it installed. The popping noise you hear is most likely high voltage arcing somewhere, check around the flyback, and related area for small burn marks or similar. That may lead you to what your looking for. Keep in mind it could be your flyback going out. I would suggest viewing it in the dark that may help you see it a little better.

Bad Flyback. I have fixed quite a few monitors in the last year and when I came to a pile of 20ez's, I am finding a very high percentage have bad flys. I just fixed one yesterday with the exact same symptom. After the game is on 10 minutes or so, you will hear a click or snap about every 5 to 10 seconds. The image will also jump with the click or snap. New fly (takes about 15 minutes to replace, you don't even need to remove the chassis from the monitor, just take it loose). Arcadecup is probably your cheapest source for this part.

I have also found this symptom to be a bad fly back. It has a crack and everytime it arcs the screen jumps. I have had this happen with two 20EZs now.

Arcade Shop has replacement flys.

FYI, if it is the flyback you may be out of luck for now. A lot of the dual monitor Nintendos used the 20Z2AW as the top monitor. Looks nearly identical to the 20EZ, but the flyback is different and not currently available anywhere.

Both monitors doing it is a bit odd.

I recently found a company that sells flybacks. If I can get an original flyback to them they can reverse engineer it and design a suitable repacement. I say this because I am expecting to recieve a NEW flyback for my Frogger that is for the original Nanao monitor. Nanao flybacks haven't been available for awhile. I was going to wait until I had it installed and test before making any post about it.

Just curious...Has anyone ever thrown a 20EZV flyback into a 20Z2AW...and see what happens.

Edward

Is it China King or whatever their name is? Same company that makes all the other repros for everyone else.

GET THE FRICK OUT!! Are you serious???

The one with the degauss switch? It doesn't use the same fly?? FRICK!! I have this issue right now with one of those monitors. UGH!!

Wait... how can you tell? The monitor I have is from a DualSystem and has a "RIGHT MONITOR" sticker. It has the degauss button. That's the 20Z2AW, right?

Look at the top of the flyback. There should be some numbers on it. Post the numbers or look in the Sanyo manuals to see which one you have. That's the only way I can tell, but there may be some other ways to tell.

Also, all the 20Z2AW's I've seen have a degauss switch. I think some 20EZV's may have them as well though.

My dual vs cabniet has a 20 ez on one side and a 20 ezaw on the other and luck would have it the aw is bad so I'm just waiting for it to die after about 10min it pops about every 30 sec to a min. Dont know what else to do. Any one have a flyback or idea who does.
