Hi I just picked up a Nintendo Vs. Cabinet today. Pretty sure it started out as either a Mario Bros unit or a DK unit, but now has a Dr. Mario pcb. So I'm almost positive it's the Sanyo EZ20.

Anyways, everything is working great except that the screen is scrolling vertically. Now, I spent a good 30 mins or more adjusting that dang vertical-hold knob, but it's super sensitive. Sometimes I can get the screen to hold position, but usually it's off (ex. the top half of the screen is cut off and loops on the bottom.) Then if I bump something in the machine it'll throw it off and will start slowly scrolling again. It shouldn't be that touchy right? Should be a lot more forgiving, no?

What would cause this hyper sensitivity of the v-hold? I looked at the flow chart, is a cap kit really the solution? Other than the vertical scrolling I think the monitor is decent. There's a tad bit of distortion, maybe the top 1/4" of the screen, but the colors and such look fine. Is it possible that the pot is corroded or something? Maybe the sync connection wiring is bad? How would I check that?

I'm completely new to the innards of arcade machines, so I'm just looking for some guidance! Thanks for any help you can give!

http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=95388 It looks like he was having similar problems, not sure if that helps at all?

Also, looking at the Sanyo Ez20 Troubleshooting guide PDF, page 6:

It says "Does the flowing of the image slow down when adjusting VR353?" Is this referring to a rolling image? I'm guessing this is talking about a wavy image and not one that scrolls vertically.

Is it possible to just replace that knob? I'm guessing that's not the problem though?

I feel like I'm way over my head with this stuff. Trying to read up, but it's a lot of information. haha. Thanks so much for any help you can give me!

maybe replace the

IC601 LA5112N Voltage regulator

that fixed my b+ problem

actually i did all these...

-new cap kit (via super bob)
-new C606 b+ cap (big honky one that dont come with the cap kit)
-new VR403 V POS 10k pot
-new VR601 b+ ADJ pot B-5k
-new IC601 LA5112N Voltage regulator

so maybe it was the C606 b+ cap (big honky one that dont come with the cap kit)

Wouldn't the IC601 LA5112N Voltage regulator affect more than just the VR353 "v-hold" pot? It seems like if the B+ was off it would affect more than just the hyper sensitivity of the v-hold.

I think we have a voltage tester, gonna try and check the B+ on it. Because if that's off it's a good starting point right?

Doh!

"Move it out of the cold and it will look fine. Nintendo monitors are by far the worst in being affected by the cold. "
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=168018

Ok, I tried it again today, and left it on for a bit longer. Let it warm up. It seems the issue cleared up. Maybe transporting it affected it too? Do monitors need to sit a while before they are in top operation? The extreme cold must be affecting it. It's out in the garage. I was able to get the scroll to stop and it stayed in place as I was playing it.

Sorry for this pointless thread. Haha. Maybe someone else can read it and learn something from it though. Anyways, thank you for the suggestions!

i would check the B+, resolder the header pins, you can resolder the pot or repalce it. there are plenty of places that sell them, i use bob roberts.

Which one would it be?
http://therealbobroberts.net/pots.html

Also how difficult are they to install? Is there a guide elsewhere on the forums?
Thanks!!

Bob sells all 5 for $10 plus shipping, and it is best just to replace them all. There is one screw that holds the little board down.

You could try reflowing the solder to those pots first and see if it makes a difference.

Wait, is it this:
20EZ Replacement Pot Kit (5) $5.00
http://therealbobroberts.net/20ezpots.jpg

The picture it shows is the daughter board itself, does that include the pots too? I'm guessing it does, but I just want to be sure. And it's only $5 so I don't know that I have the right one.

The solder sure looked fine to me, but maybe age has taken it's toll.

Sorry for my ignorance! haha

Yes, that's it. It is only the pots and not the board pictured. The price has dropped since I last bought them.

Can't wait to fix this thing up.

Hmmmm, I wonder if replacing the IC601 Voltage regulator would fix my problem, as that is about the only thing that I haven't replaced on mine. As I can't get my B+ to go above 90v. Guess I'll be trying that, as I'm kind of out of options......

Save your old IC601, there are a bad batch of new IC601's on the market and it is hit or miss if you get a good one or not.
