Hi everybody!

I was wondering if you can tell from the pictures if a cap kit would help this monitor or if it is beyond repair. I just picked this cab up and there is a loud humming/buzzing noise along with what appear to be "jail bars". I see that a cap kit should repair that but I was wondering about the other issues. It seems really washed out and there are also horizontal white lines evenly through it. I'm not sure if you can see them from the picture.

Thanks for any help and especially for all of the great information on these boards.

Dustin

Typical jail bars. Cap kit and some adjusting of the 3 brightness/sub brightness knobs should fix you right up.

Awesome! Thanks for the response and I will post my results. It will be my first time so this should be interesting. I have watched some youtube videos so i will discharge it and go from there.

Make sure to get the caps for the sound board, too, as that is probably why you are humming...

Oh..Yeah I guess that makes sense. I just ordered the cap kit, I didn't notice one for the sound there. Is an actual kit or do I have to order them individually?

Thanks

Depends on who your ordered from. If you get it from Bob, just ask for the 20EZ Deluxe Rebuild with Audio kit...

It's working, so it's clearly not "beyond repair". A good example of something "beyond repair" would be something missing critical components that aren't available anymore.

Great point! :)

Dang! It looks like I ordered from the wrong person. I see a "Nintendo Audio Board Repair Kit"
is this it? I will order it from him if so.

Again, Thanks for all of the quick responses, I really appreciate it!

The nice thing about the Sanyo's is that they look horrible before a cap kit, and GREAT after a cap kit - after all those caps at least it gives you a feeling of accomplishment lol.

Lets hope so! :)

Its my first one and I think I can manage the cap part, its the adjusting the pots after that I'm really afraid of. If nothing else it should be interesting.

Well... you guys were right, it looks a million times better and I have nice sound with NO static at all after capping the monitor and sound card!

I'm wondering if I have to adjust the horizontal size pot? How wide should it be?

Thanks so much for all of your help!

oh and my camera still sucks, it actually looks alot better!

had another EZ repair thread where the horizontal width was off... I guess it's normal after replacing the caps.

if they have a H-size pot and you don't have to touch the width coil, then great. the width to set it to is, well, whatever you want it set to. I generally keep it to about a sliver of black around the outside on all my games, you don't want to go too big, otherwise then it'll start folding over. adjust your V-size accordingly. you generally have to alternate between tinkering with the size and the positioning, but it's all trial and error stuff and there's no particular "correct" way to go about it. just not too big, and not too small. :)

I have a couple Nintendo games and I know little about the monitors themselves other than they need caps.

awesome work though, worst monitor I re-capped that had bad jailbars was a WG K7500 and it was a total :0 moment when I finished the job. lol

Thanks! :) The only horizontal size adjustment I see is an allen screw in the middle of a coil? I guess this is it?

Great job! That before and after picture should be used to advertise cap-kits. ;)

Thanks! I was really surprised at the difference it made!

Yes! But DO NOT use a standard allen key to tweak this. Inside is a brittle ferrite core, that a metal Allen key can break apart. It also heats up when you put metal in there, so there's another reason why it's not a good idea. Radio shack used to sell a small pack of TV adjustment tools, which came with plastic parts, and one of which doubled for this purpose.

I tried the Allen key method before, and now my H-width is shot and I wasn't able to adjust it. H-width coils are hard to find and can be expensive for some chassis, so be careful. Find a plastic adjustment tool to attempt this, please. This is coming from an owner of a monitor that no longer has an H-width coil available. Although I'm sure Sanyo's can still be purchased.

Thanks for the information and I will find a plastic one for sure. I will check Radio Shack and if I can't find it there I will order online. I know there was a thread around here somewhere with a link.

Again, Thanks for the information!
