I hope someone can offer me some advice. I just got my new DK machine in today. I unpacked it, got it plugged in, and played briefly. I turned it off for a bit. Turned it back on later, went to play a game, and shortly into the game the monitor brightness faded all the way down to black. Turned the machine off and on. When it turned back on I got nothing. Marquee light and sound works fine. Talking to Aaron who I bought it from he had me check all the connections and they seem fine. He then had me adjust the brightness knob on the flyback. I turned it all the way up and ran around to the front of the machine. When I did that the screen was mostly white with some visible gameplay underneath with vertical lines running through it, and then it faded to black. So I adjusted it back to mid level. Went back around and saw the gameplay for a moment, then back to black. After a few turns when I would look at the monitor it just stayed pitch black. Hope someone can help!

I know there are 3 brightness pots on these monitors but I'm not sure if that will fix a problem like this. I wonder if a cap kit would help this?

Start by unplugging all connectors, including the interboard ribbon cables and reseat them all. It is a very long trip from here to there, and things get bounced around travelling down the road.

Obviously the person that contacted me about this, didn't understand the answer that I gave him for you.

i reseated all the connectors between the board and the monitor, and between the power supply and board. and the neck board. still no dice : (

Ok, now we have a valid starting point. Verify the B+ is steady at 108vdc. The test point is TP91/BJ on the monitor chassis just forward of the big ass white resistor.

haha ok. so i just want to forewarn you that you are dealing with a total non-intellect when it comes to arcade game innards. if you can give me a layman set of directions i will get on it. thanks for the help, and patience.

Monitor

I am the seller. I capped the monitor about 3 weeks ago and ran the thing for hours before shipping it. I verified B+ after the cap kit. I am going to ship him a replacement monitor for it Monday. I suspect the Fly is failing but He has no experiance in repairing arcades so I think the easiest thing for him to do would be to just swap out the monitor and ship it back. I sure wish he could fix it but as long as he can play the game, that is what matters. If you are curious how to check B+ voltage. Here is a youtube link describing how to do it.

Could be the fly failing, but it could also be a crappy F301 fuse. I would swap out the F301 fuse first, and see if that cures the problem.

Thank You for providing a history to work with, it helps a lot.

The OP should be able to get that fuse from radio shack.

Fuse.

I think that is a good place to check. That would cause the B+ to drop. I am sure I checked how it was retained when I capped and retouched the solder joints but as you said, it is a long way from here to there.

F301 is the little fuse, and for some strange reason they sometimes cause problems after a cap kit and / or travel.

A lot of times they look good, and may even test good. But when you watch them closely, they glow orange and finally blow after awhile.

thank you very much! that's really helpful. i'll write that info down and take it to radioshack in the morning. Again, to everyone who has leant advice, thank you. I don't know crap about monitors as it is, but hopefully with some experience i'll get there!
