I dun a bad thing.

I've got a Sanyo 20EZ monitor that I didn't have a Ninty transformer board for, so I figured I'd just buy a 100V stepdown transformer and plug it into that and it should work fine. Not only did it not work, but it also seems to have caused the monitor to fail [It was working with a Ninty transformer before, but not after. I know - you're thinking if you had a Ninty transformer to test with, then why did you get the other transformer. It's because I have two Sanyo monitors, but only one transformer board. but I digress]

What hadn't occurred to me is that the stepdown transformer might not isolate it from the other stuff that's plugged into the same outlet.

So several questions here:

1. Does that sound right? Could the problem be that the stepdown transformer was non-isolated thus causing my problems?

2. What would likely go wrong on a Sanyo Monitor that was used non-isolated (but with proper voltage - I did measure the voltage on the stepdown and it was fine)

3. Does anyone know if a standalone stepdown transformer that could also properly isolate the monitor from the other components?

I'd start by checking the diodes. Replace the bad ones. make sure to lift a leg if you suspect one isn't working correctly then retest.
