I'm working on my first restoration project; a Donkey Kong. It has some monitor issues. It has a partial horizontal collapse that I understand I should be able to take care of with a cap-kit.

I posted these questions in another thread, but it got buried.

The image also sporadically "sputters," "clicks" or "sparks." It flickers, there's a bright flash on the screen and there is a crackle type sound. See the video. This was taken before I adjusted the color pots.

After searching the site and getting some advice, I believe my flyback is going bad. Other people have had this problem and the advice was that the flyback was arcing to the chassis/cage/ground. First question, does my assumption seem sound?

I've read that people suggest that you take off the flyback cage and look for the flyback arcing. This can temporarily be fixed by applying silicone gel/caulk to any cracks in the flyback. I understand that this is only a temporary fix and the flyback should eventually be replaced.

Some other questions:

Should I discharge the monitor prior to removing the cage? (I'll of course turn it off and unplug it.)

Any particular type/brand of silicone? Or just like bathtub silicone caulk?

I will eventually replace the flyback I believe. When I do this, are there other parts that should be replaced at the same time? I'll do my cap kit then.

Do all aftermarket flybacks have the 2-part focus assembly like in this guide: http://www.cinelabs.com/sanyo/Sanyo_Install.pdf ? So, do people recommend cutting the cage, like suggested in this guide?

Are any particular aftermarket flybacks better than others?

Anything else that should be kept in mind with flyback replacement?

Thanks all!

if it was mine and i determined my flyback was bad. I would not go threw the trouble to fix the chassis temporary. I would pull the chassis and install a new flyback and cap kit once its out but thats just me. Ive never purchase a flyback for a Sanyo yet but i would try Bob Roberts first.

Bob doesn't carry the flyback for the ez20, I had to get mine from chad at arcadecup.that was awhlie ago but I don't think bob still does not carry them

I've done a couple of flybacks in Sanyos. You have to come up with a method of mounting the focus assembly, I just modified the little bracket a bit and bolted it on. I don't remember how I did it precisely - it was obvious and simple though. I think it was just one little protruding bit of metal I had to trim off.

As for the cage, most Sanyo monitors I see don't have the cage. They usually got tossed a long time ago.

Thanks all.

Do my assumptions make sense?

Anyone ever use the silicone trick?

Any other parts that should typically be replaced when the flyback goes bad?

Yeah. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Just be *real* careful trying to adjust any controls on or near a cracked/damaged/glued flyback, it can really arc and bite you. Never been bitten myself, but I've seen it happen (K7000 with cracked focus divider).

When the flyback fries totally, it takes out the HOT and the B+ fuse (the little 300ma one). If you replace it before it fails, you won't have to replace these parts.

I wouldn't even try it man, just pony up and get a new one. If it's in that bad of shape you're lucky it hasn't shit itself and taken half the chassis with it already.
