i just picked up a cab with a 20-Z2AW (virtually the same monitor as the 20EZ.) it has a nice picture despite it apparently never being recapped.

every few minutes when cold and every 20-30 seconds when warm it makes a short, not too loud electrical snapping noise back by the flyback, and the picture does a single vertical roll then returns to normal.

would this likely be a bad cap or more likely some leakage from the flyback? maybe something else? i won't have time to pull the monitor and look it over until next week but i'd like to have an idea of what i'm looking for.

regardless, i'll probably be ordering a capkit from Bob since i gave my last one away with a 20-Z2AW i traded... agh.

i'll have to go back outside when it gets dark... it's currently in my Costco Barn holding pen out back. i looked for a spark but couldn't see anything, though it's not all that dark under the tent.

is this the kind of thing where if i can see a small hole where voltage is leaking i can throw a bunch of goo over the top to stop the leak? and if so, what goo? would hot glue work well enough to insulate?

Well if it's cold and moisture/condensation is present that's not good.

Best to bring the machine up to room temperature over about a 12 hour period before turning on the machine.

If the machine is warm and dry, check the flyback closely for pinholes of arcing with the room lights out. If any are spotted, unplug machine and order a new flyback.

alright, the machine is now in the house warming up. i had to move a bunch of stuff around to get it to fit and it's still in the kitchen (i kicked my new Fantasy out into the real dining room.) i'll tell my wife that Ken said i had to do it and i'm sure she'll be understanding about it.

i'll post an update later when i turn it back on.

I had this exact problem after I capped a monitor and bumped the B+ to 108. Chad at arcadecup found out that the fly for the ez and the 20-z2aw are the same. I just installed it tonight and the problem is fixed. - Barry

yep, i had the machine inside for a goodly number of hours and let it warm up and it still did the same thing. turned off all the lights, disconnected the marquee lamp and video line and i could see a faint spark coming from somewhere right near the top of the flyback at each snap.

i'm not set on having a 20ZAW in this cab so i'm not sure if i'll fix the flyback or find someone who really wants a Sanyo and do some sort of trade for a non-Sanyo.
