Hi - most of the repaint / redecals i have done in the past i have taken it down to bare wood / filled / sanded / painted or decal'd.

I read on here recently that may not be needed - upcoming repaint i have - Taito classic cab - doesnt need bondo, just some dings / wood filler.

Can i just prep the cab with wood filler / let dry / sand flat and paint over the existing paint? The thought didnt even enter my mind, but we all know how grueling the sanding / stripping part is.

Is this an option, or just laziness wanting to take over which may cause bad results (what can they be? Old paint bleeding through?).

Thanks.

By the way - plan on using Latex based Sherman Willis paints / Frontline cab.

If the paint is original then you should be able to sand it smooth and then prime and paint it.
I would prime it to be sure the surface looks good and also you can fix anything that you missed before you get paint down.
Sand with 220 before primer and final sand with 320 before paint.

Wow - that would save time.

Thanks for the reply - Just to confirm the grit / type i need - so just sand with 220 to smooth out the existing paint, apply Latex compatible primer, sand that with 320 to near perfection (keep filling dings) in order to set up the new paint?

Again, thanks.

Try 220 first and if it is going too slow then you can go to 120 or 150 then work your way back down to 220.
I only strip when the cab has been painted over.
I like to prime any spots that are fixed then sand the whole side for paint.
You can use oil or waterbased primer for latex paint.
Latex will go right over them with no problem.
Most use Kilz or Zinsser primers.
I used Rustoleum primer in spray cans on my DK and Sherwin Williams Acrylic Latex paint over it.
Are you rolling or spraying?

I am rolling - will use Latex all around, since the paint stores here are set against Oil (and since i havent used Oil in the past, would like to stick with what i know).

In the past i used Nap rollers, but based on this boards advice, going to pick up Foam today.

I have painted before, and the issue always comes down to the orange peel. Will also try light layering to avoid that. Will also try Foltetril (or whatever its called). Perhaps that will minimize the peel affect....

I painted over my Tron after removing the sideart. I sanded it just a little to take the shine off, but left the rest and didn't even prime. Had no issue whatsoever.
