Rusty bare metal: paint choice?

First get rid of the rust. Then prime with metal paint primer. Then Paint base coat and top coat if you like. I use Rustoleum products. Usually the professional line as they have a much better coverage area/spray pattern. More consistent.

Seems like Rust-Oleum is the weapon of choice.

IMO, not all Rust-Oleum products are the same. (They're all good, but some are better.)

For Atari metal, I've converged on the 2X Ultra Cover Paint + Primer. It just sprays better. It has a finer mist, so it covers better, and is easier to not get drips.

Soak the metal in white vinegar for 24-36 hours, then scrub with a stainless steel brush, which will knock off all rust, even into the pits. Wash with your favorite spray cleaner and a brush (I prefer Krud Kutter, but any will do). Rinse with the HOTTEST possible water you can get, pat dry with paper towels, then IMMEDIATELY stick in front of a fan to dry while the metal is still warm.

If you can get the object dry quickly, you'll end up with almost no surface rust, and a nice clean surface to paint. Getting the metal nice and hot with the rinse, then immediately putting it in front of a fan will dry it off faster.
