So I ended up getting this 2049 late last night.

Game plays super well and looks pretty decent.

Unfortunately the rubber on the wheel is torn pretty bad ... and its very sticky.

Is this replaceable or do I have to buy a whole new wheel?

If it was a car steering wheel I would just buy a cover for it and move on as that's all this really needs.

Yeah, I just went through this on mine as well. The one had peeling and sticky rubber and the other just had really sticky rubber... I just ended up peeling the rubber off for the time being. I can't justify spending $100+ on a pair of steering wheels when they work perfectly well w/o the rubber. I thought maybe there'd be a way to clean the rubber, but after trying a bunch of things, I think it's just deteriorating.

LOL.

Yeah I found the same issue last night. I opted for a new wheel. Hated to spend the money as well but the wheel is so sticky its gross.

Oh well.

If it's like the pole position wheels or a regular old car wheel, there are supposedly tricks to getting rid of that sticky icky goo layer that these wheels get when not being used. Iirc it has to do with the oils in your hand. There is a thread here on it(or,maybe it was on a car forum? BLARG!) but I believe it came down to a simple cleaning procedure trick for some people(on phone pia to look up right now). I know my old Chevy steering wheel gets this when I neglect her and it takes a few cleanings and a week of handling to get back to normal.

Pole Position was a hard plastic like covering and can be brought back. Rush actually had a soft kinda spongy rubber that once it starts going is done for.

I thought I read somewhere that cleaning the steering wheel with the wrong stuff is what makes them ooze..

Before I tossed the wheel out, I would try to coat it. I have seen something like a paint that will coat things like hammers and such. Maybe ask at home depot or lowes..

Here are a few I found with a quick search..

I wouldn't be surprised if that causes it was well... but I'm pretty sure that type of rubber also just deteriorates over time.

I bought a new mouse with that same material on it about 10 years ago (one of those "too good of a deal to pass up, but didn't really need it" kinda things)... I was digging through some old junk a few months ago and found that, still unopened, and that same rubber material was slimy. Of course I just tossed it, but that makes me think that it just has a limited life.

For the steering wheel itself though, I personally just took a utility knife and sliced the rubber and peeled it off the plastic core. The hard plastic underneath is perfectly usable as it is.

if that was true that they naturally deteriorate, then why are not all rush steering wheels going to goo?

I was just helping scott out the other day and he gave me a steering wheel to rush 2049. It was NOS and it almost looks powder like dry.

The 2 steering wheels on my rush 2049 se's are fine. They were high use as they came out of a movie theater. But the one on the regular rush 2049 I sold was a little sticky.

Did the regular 2049 get a lot of use? I am still riding the hand oil issue, because this is what happens to all of my car steering wheels when they've seen normal use, but wind up untouched for a long time.

Of course I don't claim to have all answers, but I'd guess either difference in manufacturing, storage conditions, etc... I mean, clearly lots of them they're deteriorating, and I doubt everyone is using the wrong stuff to clean them (if they get cleaned at all).

And I wouldn't guess that a NOS steering wheel would be gooey yet... I'm guessing this rubber is better than cheap crap used on a PC mouse, but it doesn't seem like abuse is what causes the goo, but just a limited life of regular use. And yeah, my 2049 SE seemed fine when I got it last year, but a few months ago I went to play it and it looked like it was sweating, and was sticky and nasty. I believe SE came out in 2003, so they're only ~8 years old, compared to original 2049 which came out in 1999.
