Running UMK3 without a security chip

I bet those two ROMs next to the empty security socket have been modified to not look for the security device.

I wouldnt be surprised if they were hacked.

isn't that what the anyu64 does ? the 2 revision roms are hacked to work with any u64 sec chip... so I can burn a complete set for umk3 and use my rwt sec chip to play umk3 or any other wolf unit game , atleast that's how I understand it

Yes that is what "that" does, but this is different in that he has NO chip At ALL installed. the any hack requires you to have some chip it can not be a empty socket.

That is why this board is a very interesting find.

He is in Canada ain't he? Wouldn't it make more sense for him to just send it to Steph? There both listed as in Ottawa CA anyways..... That way he does not have to worry about Customs ect...

Good point and didn't notice that.

We're both in Ontario (Province), but about 400 miles apart.

...a bit too far to drive with my programmer ... ;-)

I would offer to chip and pay shipping charges. If Zeno is up for it, I'd nominate him to dump the Roms and give the board a look to see if anything is different about it. He has the experience, smarts, and an overall trustworthy guy that he has earned for all that he does for people.

Thanks for the kind words. If the OP wants to send them to me, I'll happily take a look.

Yes, except for 2-on-2 Open Ice. Those boards have a different CMOS chip and you can't install Open Ice on any board that doesn't have that specific CMOS chip on it. Otherwise, you'll get a "CMOS Chip U49 Bad" error. The game will play and run perfectly, but you won't be able to save any settings. The other six Wolf Unit games are all interchangeable with each other.

We were talking about the OP shipping you the board or the eeproms for you to dump.

Yah, I've been talking with the OP.

We're working something out.

(...and I promise to share with the Community if I get anything )

:) i would like to see when the OP boots up the pcb the ram/rom test at start if it does flag any errors.

I am pretty sure correct me if i am wrong but if there is no U64 it doesn't boot at all just sits on a black screen?

Correct. That's why I think it's either something in the revision roms to make it run without the U64, or it's some other chip that's faulty that is not asking for info from U64 and allowing the game to run without it.

Well if it turns out to be a faulty Chip, that would be a great "hack" to make a swap game system, or a huge aid in making a upgrade for a board. Even if it is a Rom Change knowing the proper place to bypass in the code will also help.

How funny would it be if it were just a stuck gate or two on a neighboring part? LOL!

I'm going with hacked boot roms though.

I'm going with a bad chip(s). What would be the point of hacking the revision roms to run the game without the security chip unless it failed and they couldn't get a replacement? That's the only scenario I can think of.

I thought so i pulled out my UMK3 to test this idea but now i don't need to :)

I am going with a faulty PCB or its failed in such away that it bypasses it
