Okay, so for the most part, there's a lot of short-cuts (and long-cuts!) in the game, with one well-known exception being the huge loop in one of the basic tracks.

Believe it or not, I just found something new (to me). 20 years later, and I still find something new.

In one of the Advanced tracks (5th track, after Alcatraz), I went down a small alley. It dead-ended, but there was a floating 'Atari' cube. When you hit it, nothing happens - but the cube disappears, so.. you get *something*.

Anyone know what that is? :D

What game is this?

RtR?
San Francisco Rush: The Rock (Alcatraz). Sorry, I thought the abbreviation was pretty well known. :D

Where's the alley?
I can only tell you how I got there, and when I get home tonight, I'll check it out from the main track and reply back here. I'll admit I know some of the usual shortcuts, this was something new and unexpected. Be curious to find out what it does - if anything.

Okay, here's how you get to it.
I had forgotten, so had to drive it again. (And, more amazingly, I found another .. er.. 'easter egg'? See below..) I did see that ig gave me an additional 20 seconds on the timer. Though with the time lost getting to it, I'm not sure that it's really worth it in the end.

But -
On the 'Downtown' track (track #5), start off and follow the main track. Don't take any shortcuts. At the *6th* chevron sign (counting ONLY chevron signs that are facing you - i.e. not ones you pass that are aimed at traffic coming from a shortcut or alternate route.) turn the WRONG way (right).
The 6th chevron signs will point to the left. Go right. Then the alley is on the left, directly after the FIRST building on the left. Follow it (there are a few light turns) and at the dead end will be the floating Atari logo.

So a new one I found that folks probably knew about but me, but I thought it was interesting:
Going the same way, instead of turning down the alley, take the alley on the RIGHT after the blue building. The alley will narrow at an odd red building. If you stick to the right, opposite the building (on the left) is a VERY steep ramp on the right. If you go up it, it will come out shortly down the track. BUT, it you turn around, you will see the red building, with "NUDE GIRLS" on it.
Now, I couldn't explore this more, but I THINK you may be able to get some speed and land on TOP of the NUDE GIRLS building. The one time I saw this (before I had to come upstairs) my grace timer timed out before I could try to reach it.

Both of those are awesome finds! I love RtR and know most of the shortcuts, but yeah, I need to do more exploring, too!
