RTC Self Check Error

He'll know soon. It went out last night via the DFW Airport Post Office.

It's open 7 days a week until 8pm, 7pm on Sundays. :D

that was an excellent service of yours! I hope that helped already. I'm just wondering how the RTC could become bad - is there a backup battery in the block or what ? btw. anyone got experience to share about about backing up and restoring the Memory Cards of the Viper board ?

Yup.

I'm waiting for him to receive and test it. If it works, then I'll order a dozen of the chips and have them on standby for programming. I can sell the chip + $3.99 programming + a socket & shipping pretty reasonably.

sounds excellent. Ok, I recall the nvram protection thing again on viper with the M48T58Y block. That would be nice to have the option as on the cps2 boards (phoenix).

I know that vipers rtc can be cracked and copied. The cf memory cards are another story. I also am having the same problem. Let me know if your able to fix this

I see on my board that the RTC is already on a socket :001_scool: But how the data in it will go bad from one second to another is unclear to me. anyone got a replacement idea that does not use the battery backed up 8k ram ... ?

what game is it from?? Some of the games require the rtc while for some reason others do not. My police 911 2 board works without a rtc, but it came with one for some reason.

mine is a Police 911. after removing and reinserting the pcmcia card it checked normally for the U57(ok), U13(ok), MemoryCard(ok) and failed afterwards with the rtc bad error. so there's no change on the board just removing/re-inserting the card. but if channelmaniac ist able to re-program the chip with the mame data(nvram) it should be easy for mine to be recovered.

Well, this is an experiment. If it works, we'll all be happy. If not, well, there's some guy in France that supposedly can reprogram the RTC chips for Racing Jam.

I just went thru the thread over at shmups.system11.org. there's also a guy with a broken terraburst with the same sign (RTC Self Check Error). there was someone given the advise to just push the 'test'-button while fireing up the board to reset some bad data but that semt not to work for anyone (even myself).

That procedure works on some Konami boards to reinitialize the EEPROM, not the RTC chip.

I just looked at my last police 911 boards I picked up from eBay. It does not need the rtc to work for some reason. There maybe sometime else going on with yours. Just a suggestion that the board could be the issue. RJ do you have any luck with the viper system?

Its a standard compact flash holder. Thinking out loud here...I believe that the older pcbs need the rtc. New dedicated boards like police 911 2, warzaid and the mocaps work without the rtc. So it seems there could be a way around using it.

Just for the fun of it i threw in a 64MB card that I wrote the data of 'code 1 dispatch' from the mame roms on it and I got that:
1. DEVICE CHECK U57 OK
U13 OK
2. DISK MEDIA CHECK MEDIA OK
3. RTC SELF CHECK BAD
4. Reset and back to 1.
