Konami Racing Jam - When powering up, all ROMS test as OK, then it hits a black screen with "RTC Self Check Error", and reboots.

Any ideas?

Replace the chip with one that has the necessary data already loaded in it. It's a copy protection scheme of some kind.

I'm not 100% sure if the code for it in the MAME dumps will resurrect it or not.

Thanks!

1. How do I find which chip?

2. Isn't RTC - Real Time Clock?

3. Can you repair this for me?

I would have guessed it had something to do with the clock (likely a dead battery), but I've never seen the game, so take that for what it's worth. Have you looked for a battery on the board?

This thing has a whole stack of boards inside a metal box. I don't really like taking the stack apart. Maybe I should.

I know on the konami viper system the rtc is a black four pronged device that contained the security info. It was located outside the metal cage near the compact flash card. Your application maybe different.

Yellow Circled Area is Static RAM/Real Time Clock on the CPU board according to a Google search (Can't tell you shit beyond that, just trying to help)

I just picked up a tube of the zero power RAMs.... lemme check to see what part #s they are.

Any idea if you can help me?

If not, is there anyone or any place that fixes these System 16 boards? I'd pay good money, as the cabinet was darn near free.

What chip do you have on the board?

I dug out the non-volatile chips out of the box of chips I picked up. They are DS17287-5 which is a RTC + NVRAM chip.

Edit: Never mind, the MAME archives says it's a m48t58y-70pc1 chip which is a Timekeeper chip with 8k x 8 NVRAM. Mouser.com has it for a little under $22 ea, plus shipping. Part #: 511-M48T5870PC1

If you want to order one and drop ship it to me, I'll put the data on it from the MAME archives and you can try that to see if it fixes the problem.

I can.

Will you be drop shipping the part to me from Mouser?

Shoot me a PM or email and let me know how you want to do everything. I'll do whatever is easiest for you.

OK,

New chip has been programmed with the info from the MAME dumps, the old chip removed, the board socketed, and the new chip installed.

I'll send back the old chip with the board. Let me know how it works out when you reinstall it.

Hi, have you been able to recover your board ? I had the same issue arriving yesterday. I just pulled the PCMCIA card out and put it back in the slot and there it was :-(
