I was just given a Rowe MM5 Jukebox and I know nothing about them; there is no coin mechanism in it or magazine in it. Do I need these to make it operate?

If there's no "magazine" then the jukebox is useless as a 45 rpm vinyl machine. You could 'convert' it to a mp3 setup (home use only, not licensed for commercial use).

Why don't you post some pictures of the inside of your machine. Then I can see exactly what you do and don't have.

This is a front view and you can see no magazine.

Yep you are right, that picture clearly shows there is no Time, Newsweek, Playboy or any other type magazine...but that big ugly round thing that holds the records with all that stuff fastened to it is also called a "magazine" in the jukebox world...so yes you do have one...

SOOOOOOOOOOO, the small round thing off to the left that is missing is called the Popularity Meter. I get it..Next question. Will it run without the Popularity Meter, and do you really need it?

Thanks Ken
Now I have to figure out why it doesn't. All fuses are good, and I have sound, although a slight Hum. All lights are working but the switches do not stay in when pressed. Nothing happens when I push credit, and I mean nothing, not even a click. Now that I know the wheel in back is called a magazine; the magazine rotates when I push the lever all the way forward and hold it and the magazine also rotates when I pull it back to scan. The switch does feel very sloppy, so I will start there. One more thing going on, the coin mechanism is not there, but looks like they have put a jumper wire in its place.

Thanks guys

Hi Terry,

Just behind the consol that holds the service switch is the Credit Unit (sometimes called a credit clock). If you move the wiper on the front of the credit unit clockwise it should give you credit and engage the the keyboard latch solenoid.

There is a fuse on this credit unit and if blown must only be replace with the same value or smaller.

The fuse blew and I replaced it. I can hear the Solenoid click from the Amplifier and than nothing happens. Except the sound dampens down. The arm on the credit unit was loose when I brought the machine home and I tightened it., but I did that right where it was on the shaft. I suspect it is not where it is should be set. When I check continuity on the three solenoids in the coils in the select button panel I can get a reading on the main latch solenoid, but get no reading on the other two. The other thing I found was, the dollar bill wire that runs from the power transformer to the coin mechanism was burned to a crips. I have replaced that, but I dont need because there is no dollar bill mechanism on this machine. Someone in the past must have tried it and it fried the wire.

Hi Terry,

If you look on Ebay there is a few of these of the credit units for sale, I suggest that you check it out, I seen at least 3 or 4 for sale this week. Try and get one with the plastic cover I noticed that yours was missing.

This MM5 set in an oily environment, so everything is covered in a thin film of oil. I have not tried very hard to look for my problem yet. I have been spending time cleaning the film off everything.

I found another blog site where you were helping a guy from Belgium. His name was Jan. Did he get the Jukebox going?
Also in the blog you mention:
"The latch bar solenoid works off of 30 volts AC and is switched by the R1 contacts 7 & 8. It is one of the relays under the plastic cover on the keyboard assembly the other relay is R5".
My R1 and R5 do not have covers, is this something only on the MM6?

To anyone
I have found this problem on my MM5 this morning and it may be why my record changer is not working. Remember I am not knowledgeable about these or the components. (I'm no Tech.)
What is it and where can I buy them.

P.S. My Manual has not arrived yet and this may not be D-6, my schematic was downloaded from the net and is hard to read.

Yeh that diode is shot. it appears that all four of the diodes on that terminal strip are installed with the polarity band (cathode) pointing to the left in your picture.

I only have a genuine Rowe MM6 manual which is a supplement to be used with the MM5 manual. I believe your diodes are type 1N5402 or 1N5404. You can buy these at Radio Shack as part numbers 276-1143 and 276-1144 respectively.
