Have a CD100A that we sold to a customer and are having some problems with it. First, the original decoder seemed to be acting a bit flaky, so we replaced it from one from A&B Jukebox repair. It would randomly show a board error on the decoder LED (not the main computer). It would stop playing if it was in normal mode, and in service mode it would not rotate the carriage.

I put the replacement decoder in, and it seemed to work fine. It played fine for us for the remainder of time that we had it and for about a week or two for the customer.

The customer who purchased it called and said it stopped working. I went to go look at it, and it was doing the same thing. It would show board error on the decoder and wouldn't play or rotate the carriage in service mode.

Here is my main question:
Upon looking to see if anything had been modified or messed with, I noticed some external speakers had been hooked up. They had used the black plug that goes right into the decoder (white female plug, not the red).

Did that damage the decoder or is the decoder bad? I have never hooked up external speakers to one of these, but I would assume you would need to use the separate area ( top left area of a CD100A).

Could something else be going wrong where it just appears that the decoders are bad when in fact that they are good? I have another decoder on the way and I am hoping that will be the end of it.

Any help would be appreciated; I could be in a bit of a jam here.

What model player is in this juke? CDM3, CDM4, CDM12, CDPRO, or CDPRO2?

If it's a 3 or a 4 then the mech decoder was well known for *every* solder joint being bad on it.

There are instances where the "Service Switch" (slide switch) in the jukebox going bad. It has multiple sections and all it takes is one section of it to get tarnished contacts to cause intermittent problems. This used to plague the R88 jukeboxes too. Sometimes you can fix it by squirting some contact cleaner into the switch and working it back and forth a bunch of times while the power is off. Generally though, I end up replacing the switch.

And don't forget to check for cold solder joints on the CCC board (particularly the header pins that go to the mechanism decoder) and the power supply board. If the juke has been upgraded to the CDPRO or CDPRO2 player then it should also have gotten a new power supply board. The new power supply board has an inductor on it that develops cold solder joints.
