could piggybacking some working ram on the different ram banks be a possible way to find defective ram?

Sending it to the US to be repaired would probably be more expensive tahn buying a functional board (60€) - so that would be the way I go, if I can't fix it my self.
 
It's possible if one of the RAM outputs is damaged or degraded. But it would be a long shot. Where in the EU are you? I know there are a handful of repair persons over there. You might check with Level42 - he might know of someone.
