Route 16 Spite double'ng, help.

Honeymoon's over...

I've been leaving the new Route 16 on for a few hours at a time, this last time was 5 hours. Apparently, that was just a smidge too long.

Getting goofy graphics now, it's tiled twice vertically, and 4 or so times horizontally. Text and pretty much everything not related to actual game graphics is fine, but the sprites for the cars, mazes, items, etc etc are all tiled and some are a little jumbled.

When I restarted the game, the... what I can only assume is the RAM test(?) was solid on 1 side, it normally has lines on it as well.

EDIT, checking everything in the manual listed under Video RAM. Also checking out the idea of replace'ng 8116 RAM with modfied 4164... should be good right?

I read you can replace 8116 ram with 4116... but if you can replace 4116 with modfied 4164, then you should be able to replace 8116 with the 4164 (mod'd), right? Just try'ng to make everything as reliable as possible for the future.

Bump... ...

Still could use a little help if you have any idea why it started doubling and quadrupling the graphics.

I would start with checking various buffers and multiplexers on the address lines.

Data problems generally show up as corrupt graphics. Address line problems as doubling of graphics or the wrong graphics being chosen. Not always, but generally. ;)

What should I be looking for? Would it be something as simple as an output being stuck high or low? Or it is going to be something a little harder to spot like ingnore'ng the inputs on 1 pin, etc etc.

Just talking about on average...

And thank you.

That's where I'd start... looking for pins stuck high or low... or ones that are racing thanks to a messed up output somewhere.

Holy crap... just saw the date on this thing, I can't believe it's been this long.

Anyways, I finally got a job and was able to order in some parts that I've been needing for years. Replaced the part I thought was bad tonight (can I say "finally" again?)

I don't remember the original issue with the IC I replaced, but it was a bad 153 (replaced with SN74LS153N) at IC5.

Just had to post a follow up. ... finally fixed.

That's my original board (the booboo'd) running on top, and my replacement (now backup) board on the bottom.
