Specifically Marble Madness in my case, but would apply to many other games - any idea of where i can find out what the differences are between different romsets, not the files themselves, but what effects they have on games?
You can check in MAME, the zip files contains romsets, there are 5 versions for that game in a -not too latest- version I use. So there would be more in an updated.
Regarding pinball, check this site: www.ipdb.org
Its a good information source, there´s even game rom to download.

What I usually do is a quick google search of the game name + the latest version number. That will sometimes lead to a discussion thread about the versions of the game. I usually upgrade my PCBs to the latest version to be sure I have addressed any bug fixes that the manufactures found once the games went out on location.
Unless through a search I learn of something that would make an earlier version more desireable... ie: MK characters in early versions of NBA Jam TE.

Anyway, what i am after is info on what differences there are between the rom revisions on certain games - gameplay, bug fixes etc. In this particular case i am most interested in Marble Madness as i have a couple of issues with it and wonder whether an different romset would iron them out...

mamedev.org use to have info about history revisions, but if you search that game theres no result, what I figure is download all rom versions, run everyone and compare...
I think the only source that would have that info should be mame, run windows version and check every romset detail.. you can right click and go to properties
