i was wondering if anybody can point me into the right direction on an FAQ or info on reprogramming and burning rom chips for arcade boards. I just inherited a bunch of chip burners and piles of EPROMS. I have a few pole positions that need new chips. Thanks!

Rom CHip programming

One is A willem PCBV5.0 the other is a TOP853. Will these even burn Pole Position ROms? What is a good overall programmer for burning all sorts of arcade EPROMS? I have about 20 games and half of them have chip problems.

Ahh the good ole willem...

He was a nice man, to bad he passed away :(

you should be able to program those, you will need a UV eraser first.

My personal advice on the Willem would be to see how far you can throw it. Hateful things, those. I know some people love them, but I was very much not impressed. Most of the problems revolve around the abysmal software and the lack of good program voltage power supply.

But, at least on Pole Position, it shouldn't be that bad, it takes mostly 2764's, which even the Willem can handle (usually).

You'll need an EPROM eraser, EPROMs are erased by UV light of a specific wavelength. If you don't have one, building one is pretty simple - I made my own using a UV tube I got at the pet store, it's used in pond filters to kill bacteria.

Also, in Pole Position, those ROM errors aren't actually problems with the ROM chips. They're problems with the board, the power distribution, and the sockets.

Agreed... They were good when willem was still alive, and updating the code..

but keep in mind they were LPT based for Win95

Nice. Yeah i have the UV eraser. Im going to try some testing tonight. i have an old Windows 98 PC with a parallel port that the Willem should work fine with. I can load the files from a mame rom right? I have a link to the website that tells me what files go on what chip i think its solvalou.com I have some 2716 chips i might mess with. I think ill use my defender to test it on.

2716's are going to be a problem with the Willem. The Willem's power supply just doesn't usually have the right voltages to support burning 2716's, 2732's or 2532's - and even with the mods it's flaky at best. Chips like the 2764, 27128 and newer will work better, since they use 21vpp. The Willem is really best for the later CMOS technology chips though, as burning older NMOS devices requires more current.

So i hooked up an external power supply to my Willem, set the voltage to 25ppv and what do you know it actually worked. Burned 2 EPROMS for my Defender. i just copied the data from the original. Nice. Thanks everyone for the tips.
