Hey guys I am going to be buying a board with a bad Eprom chip. I figure now is the time to invest in an ROM burner. Not only would I be able to fix the board with but I could use it to covert my Baywatch sound roms to the American version and I could also upgrade my MK pcb's to whatever revision or hack version that I wanted to.

Now I did some searching on here and found a post on ROM burners and lots of people in there stated the GQ-4x was a good burner. I noticed this website offers two different versions of that burner, the light pack and the full pack. http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/comersus_dynamicIndex.asp

Any ideas on the difference between the two? Basically I just want something that I will be able to convert or change different versions of MK like upgrading to a juggernaut hack or changing to revision 3.0 ect. I have no idea what all chips the MK boards use and therefore I am not sure which one of these I would need to get. Looking at the website and what each includes is like trying to decipher a foreign language to me. Can anyone help me with this? It looks like you would need some kind of chip adaptors to use these burners as there is a large opening for many pins and I do know that the ROM and Eprom chips are smaller than that.

Get the GQ-4X unit and the optional power pack. I doubt you would use any of the adapters so its kind of a waste of money. The power pack is needed when burning the older roms like 2716, 3532, 2732 etc. Although mine will burn them without additional power, it really depends on the usb port on your pc since they can vary alot. You want to avoid using the front access usb port on the computer for this reason. To be safe just get the power pack and leave it plugged in all the time.

Thank you so much I was looking for the difference. So basically this comes with a bunch of stuff I wouldn't need.

So you think the Light pack would be sufficient? I am still clueless if I would need to buy any separate adapters to burn Mortal Kombat chips. I basically want to be able to burn any Rom, Eprom or sound chips on Wolf unit boards. Will the light pack do all that with out having to buy adapters?

I agree, you don't really need the "full pack" crap.

However, if you intend to do 90s-era stuff, you'll very likely need the "16-bit EPROM adapter" sooner rather than later.

Oh, I think the wall wart they sell is listed under "adapters". I didn't buy one from them, I just used one from the box of them I've collected over the years.

Is there a website that has rom image downloads that I could use? Say I wanted to convert a MK3 to a UMK but don't have the roms. Is there a place I could go to download them?

Also a question for all the MK aficionados, if I wanted to convert a MK 3 board to a juggernaut edition or different revision, what are the chips that I would need to order and what type. I am talking any sound rom changes, eproms ect. I am trying to get an idea how many and what chips I need to stock up on.

You will want to get the ROM sets from MAME. I have a full set for repairing and converting, I never play a game in MAME unless I want to see what it should look like to verify my repairs.

I am starting to think about just buying the TOP. I mean I, am not going to be opening a rom burning business or anything. As long as it works good and works for the MK chips, than I would be happy. Plus with the extra $50 I save buying this one, I can get an UV eraser and stock up on some chips. I found somebody on ebay selling one in California so I wouldn't have to wait forever for shipping from overseas.

I'll sell you my Top Burner for $40 shipped. I wasn't able to getting it running in compatibility mode on my Win7 machine so it's never been used.

PM me if you want it.
