I was playing Atari's Batman last night on MAME (yes, this game bloooooowws), and first thing came to mind was what a rip off. I call these games Rolling Thunder clones. I know many late 80's jamma games fit into this category.

My question was Rolling Thunder the first game in this genre? Or was there one that predates this.

Some examples are of the following: Shinobi, Batman, Thunderjaws and Crime City.

Elevator Action is very similar. Same Style gameplay, just going down instead of up/across/down.

Rough Ranger by Exidy is a VERY close and overall crappy knockoff of RT, and I guess Sly Spy is simular although that's certainly better than RR, and Elevator Action Returns is more like it than the first.

Yep, that's the other one I played as well. Rough Ranger is almost exact. It's like a palate swap. Another one that's really similar is Taito's Crime City.

Rough Ranger for sure... on a side note, RR was designed by SUNA Electronics, distributed by Capcom, and manufactured by Sharp Image, who also bought us Dyger, Goindol, and Turtleship.

Not sure why KLOV has Exidy listed as the manufacturer.

PM that info to Mod and so he can update their pages.

I thought Goindol was by Sun A?

That makes sense. I could've sworn I saw "Capcom" on the Rough Ranger machine I was playing at one time, but that was many years ago.

Those games are different enough then Rolling Thunder, I've played them all, they may have borrowed some elements but what action game don't have platforms to jump on? Games that ripped off Rolling Thunder are Rough Rangers Arcade and Code Name Viper for the NES.
Not sure how you can say Crime City is a rip of Rolling Thunder.
