Rollergames upper diverter problems

Cross posting from another forum to see if the KLOV crowd has any insight.

Ok, update. We replaced the varistor and still got the "adjustment failure" message. This time I backed it out of that through the cabinet door buttons and got to "factory restored," and the game reset and popped on! The varistor does not seem to be heating up at all with all plugs in. The "adjustment failure" message comes up every startup. We replaced the batteries but still no luck getting rid of that.

Only problem now - there's no general illumination at all. We checked the plugs on the interconnect board and they seem decent. Fuses on that board also tested good. Backbox lights working fine. Flashers and solenoids all seem to work well and game plays, just dark.

We noticed there was no plug in the J9 position on the interconnect board. It's labeled "lower playfield GI." We're 99 percent sure there was no plug there when we took the playfield out, but thought I'd ask if anyone knows for sure.

Thanks to all for any help!

Quick update - figured out there are two spots for a J9 connector. One on the interconnect board and one on the auxiliary power driver board. The one on the APD board apparently is not used but the one on the interconnect board is. And they're the same size and keyed exactly the same. Switched it over to the interconnect board and bingo, the lower GI is now working.

But the upper is still out. Might be a fuse? Almost have this damn thing working. Agh.

On a side note, the diverter is working like a charm. That is extremely satisfying.

OK, we got the upper GI on. The problem? Every singe bulb on the string had burned out. They were all brand new replacements we put in during the shop out, but they must have blown when the varistor went or because of the J9 plug being in the wrong spot. Either way, about 20 or 30 bulbs later and it's starting to look like it should.

Only problem left right now is figuring out what the deal with the batteries/holder is. Still getting "adjustment failure" on startup, losing all high scores and settings. Could be worse, as I like playing on factory settings, but it is an issue that need resolving.

Getting close. Thanks to everyone for all the help!

Final update for awhile. Got the adjustment failure message reset and now it's holding settings and scores! Didn't realize I had to clear that message. The only thing that's left is two flashers aren't working, but we're letting it slide for the foreseeable future.

It's now about as clean as it can be, new white rubber (which really sets it off, in my opinion) and the diverter is firing hard and true. It's happy time.

Thanks for everyone who offered help. It was more than appreciated!

That's great, was up in tell 3 am shopping mine too. Got a row lights out in the backglass and need to align my plunger, and then I'm done too.

That's great! Hope it's turning out well.

I know I said that was the last update, but I realized I never posted any pics of the diverter, which was the reason for creating the thread in the first place.

Here's the one that was on the machine. Note the blown-out end on the right. It's hard to tell, but it appears this was some kind of replacement installed aftermarket. The arm (which was about an inch longer than it's supposed to be) was bolted directly to the plunger arm - no master spring to absorb the shock.

And here's the one we made. You can see the master spring between the plunger and the arm. It's now working great. First time we've ever tried to fix something like this so we're pretty pleased about it. And now we have steel blanks to make more if we ever have to.

And, of course, the damn main link spring broke the other night. Not entirely sure how that happened in only four months, but looks like it's time to order a new one. Maybe several.

I'm hoping I can find a good way to replace it without taking the whole playfield out again. If that can be done it's not that big a deal. If it has to come out, good grief, I don't want to think about it, honestly.

I was able to replace the spring without taking the play field out. It's a tight workspace but it can be done!

That's good to hear. I figured it was possible, if not very cramped, but I'm very pleased to hear from someone who's actually done it!

Thanks K3V, you've cheered me up :)
