Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots at Dave & Buster's

Hmm....another game that recycles themes from the 70s and 80s....pffff.

What's next...Pacman, Galaga and Space Invaders on giant screens?? :)

Took my girls to D&B a few weeks back, and they watched some people play them. They look really fun! It's quite the workout to manipulate the controls, and you do get a pretty good amount of play time for your money. I'd recommend them.

I agree with Frizz. Great idea, but terrible execution. It looks purely mechanical, thus way too hard to get the range of motion that made the original fun. The guys are punching each other in the video, and it doesn't even look like the jabs reach the other guy's face. Like it's all fake, and just on a timer, and one head pops up eventually, after eating your kid's 5 bucks (or whatever stupid price it is). No actual skill required.

If the robots were more motor-driven, so you were controlling some actual power, and could maneuver like the original game, now that would be cool. But that just looks like glorified sticks and pulleys. I'm embarrassed for the designer. Ya blew it.

Turning and positioning the robots is mechanical, punching is achieved by pushing a button. The game play IS timed, but there's a score counter of successfully landed punches, and the operator can control whether the game triggers a win on a target punch count, highest score at the end of the timer, or neither.

The game we saw was set to 5 minutes of play, and a head pop was 10 landed punches.

We enjoyed the game.

A few fun things can be done to make this system more interesting.

A nice Hydraulic system would give you quicker response than a motor-driven system.

Maybe armor that registered a blow would be fun. A certain amount of blows and armor pops off.

Arms and a leg that pop off could be fun.

Force feed back would be fun.

Impractical for a dave and buster game.. Yea I know but it would be fun.

I think an adult version of "Real Steel" would have been fun..

They'll be theater-sized next...

Too late on that prediction...

The Strong Museum has a giant Space Invaders that projects onto the wall. I hear there may be more...

We had a company dinner at D&B during IAAPA and saw them. Unfortunately
they were not working. :(
