Robotron with a rom error....Should I or shouldn't I?

Well I finally got the photos for the Robotron arcade, and it's not looking too good.
The cabinet I don't think is the original cabinet, there is no sideart on the game at all, and the wico joysticks have been replaced.
I appreciate all of the help everyone has given, but I think I'm going to hold out for a dedicated machine.
Here are the pictures he sent, if anyone is interested in it give him a ring.
The guy is located out of Jacksonville Florida, heres the craigslist listing:

His name is Stan 904-415-7300, nice guy.

If the condition of the machine is decent I say go for it. A working rom board for robotron is not a big expense.

Was possibly going to pickup a Robotron arcade, but the game has a rom error.
Everything else from what the seller says works, but I'll obviously get more info when I go there.
Wanted to ask the group if the issue was major and should I go for it or no?
Never really had a robotron and really didn't know that much about the game, so any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Everyone loves Robotron. Get it if the price is decent. But broken means price is at least half (for me at least).

Great game, you won't be sorry and that is fixable. What is he asking if you don't mind telling. You should be able to get the price down because it isn't "working."

He's asking $200 for it.
I don't have any pictures of it yet, suppose to be getting those tonight some time.

He also mentioned the top back of the game he broke.
I guess there are two backs, one thats on a hinge and the other that it above the hinged door that can be removed from the game.
He thought he broke the top door.
Other than that, I won't know the condition until I see the pictures.

i would if the rest of the cab are in good shape but thats just me i have always wanted one and its on my list of games to get. but again it all depends on what the cab looks like, good luck and post photos

A complete Robotron in decent condition with a problem is well worth $200.00 IMO. But I do LOVE the game!

I am cheap, but I think I would jump on that as well. I haven't sen one for sale close to me yet, but I keep looking. If the rest of the machine looks good, offer $100 or $150, but probably be willing to pay the $200. Check to make sure it has the original wico 4" joysticks. If not, I would definitely pay less.

With out seeing any pics it sounds like a pretty good buy to me as well!
Robotron! Yay!

$200 is a good price for a Robotron. The back door is easily replacable on WIlliams cabs. I do it all the time. A piece of 1/2" plywood cut to size and notched at the bottom to fit the matching notch on the top of the bottom door. It just slides into place and is held by the lock. It takes about 30 minutes if you have a table saw. A little longer if you have to cut it with a circle saw and cut the notch with a chisel or router.

There are 5 main boards in a classic Williams game.

1) Power supply. This is the board normally attached to the left (from the back) inside wall. There are 5 fuses on it. When it is functioning correctly there are 3 LEDs that are lit on it. +5V, +12V and -5V.

2) MPU board. The large board attached to the lower back door. CHeck for missing chips.

3) ROM board. To the upper right of the MPU board attached by a ribbon cable. If it is working correctly the 7 segment LED should be showing a zero. It will be flashing diagnostic message if there are any problems.

4) I/O board. Small board directly below the ROM board, aslo attached to the MPU board by a ribbon cable.

5) Sound board. Normally attached above the power supply board on the left inside wall.

If it is not working, buy it anyway. There are several people here that rebuild Williams boards for reasonable prices (myself included). Robotron is easily one of the top 5 classic arcade games.

If it did work perfectly, it's not like it would forever. If you get to the point of seeing an error code, it should be totally fixable.

If its in pretty nice condition and I had $200, I would go for that. Probably just one bad ROM or maybe ribbon cable. Most likely not too hard of a fix.

I paid more than that for my Robotron which had a ROM error.

Now look at it..
