Are there different sound ROMs for Robotron?

The reason I ask is i finally got my sound working (kind of) on my Robotron. Some sounds are correct and some aren't

For example the shooting..snowmen and people capture I know are correct. Ones I know are definitely incorrect are when the board changes..I get some strange noise. There is no sound to respawn..and when I die I get proper sound but then immediately after get I get the 'level change' sound. The beginning of the brain board..again I get something totally different.

I've tried 2 different Robotron sound ROMs with the same results..I also switched between the blue ROMs and the red ROMs. I had to switch sound boards because of a failure but the old ROM was fine. The new board has the sound ROM labeled 'Robotron'. I also tried the ROM out of the failed board (that I know was correct) and that one does the exact same thing.

Tis a strange one..

Any ideas?

AFAIK, there is only one sound ROM for Robotron. Based on your symptoms it sounds like you may be having issues with the PIA chip on the ROM board. This is the chip that controls the data lines that go from the ROM card to the sound card.

Indeed there is only one sound rom for Robotron,
...regardless of whether you have the Blue or orange eproms.

The sound board can be strapped for 2532 or 2732 eproms,
but are usually always set for 2532.
(...and if you have the wrong eprom type, you'd get no sound at all ).

If you get the same problem with two different eproms on the same board,
it is likely indeed the PIA chip (...which is common source of failure on those boards )

Good luck.

Thanks..
So help me out with this PIA chip. Is it on the sound board? Is it the other socketed chip (big on on the left had side running vertical if looking at the board mounted in the cab)?

Id that's the case I've read a couple posts here that I can swap that chip from almost any Williams game..thus my backup defender board set would work?

Thanks!

Update: I buzzed all the wires between the ROM board and the sound board and all was fine. I found a busted crimp connection on the sound board from one of the wires from the ROM board. Fixed that and all is fine

Thanks for the help!
