Hi,
I am having Robotron issues. I get a Rom error 6 message and adjustment error on start up but the game still plays. For some reason it stuck on unlimited lives. I cant adjust any of the on screen settings and I get CMOS error in test mode and the door IS open. I have attached photos. I cant seem to find Rom 6 in the MAME set and it looks as though my board has battery acid. I replaced all the rams with no errors. PLEASE HELP!!

Looking at the ROM board, you'll see one numbered as 6. That is ROM 6. Try cleaning the legs, reseating the chip, reseating or flexing the ribbon cable (might have a break). Usually you don't get a ROM error from battery acid (at least not that I've seen).

As for the unlimited lives, pull the batteries with the game off, leave it off for about 5 minutes, then power it back up. Your CMOS should be cleared. Put in new batteries, reset your settings if you wish, and you should be fine...

Also check the continuity on the memory protect switch. This is the small interlock switch that is closed when the coin door is open. It has a single red wire that runs to the 4 pin header on the CPU board. If this doesn't have continuity to to ground, the machine will act like the coin door is closed.

Also check the voltage coming off the batteries at the board. Very often the battery holders have corroded or broken and are not actually letting the current flow to keep the static RAM alive.

ROM 6 was one of the ROMs that didn't change much. At one point, the MAME sets were packed as a base version and the differences between versions. You may need to check with a different set of Robotron ROM images to get a ROM 6 image if cleaning the pins doesn't help.

I seem to be having the same issue. I just had the power supply rebuilt and I'm not quite sure what would be causing the issue since it seemed to be working fine before. In my case the interlock for the front door is disconected and the wires are tied together so I should have ground continuity there. I have the high score save kit so no double A batteries, I put it in there less then a year ago so I would think the battery is still good but I guess I could try replacing it.

Try going into bookkeeping and manually reset the high scores and set it back to factory settings. If that fails, you may need to go into the diagnostic and run the COMS RAM test.

The ROM tests are fairly accurate. I would replace ROM 6. I can burn a 2532 or 2732 with the correct image if you need it. I am cheap, pay postage, chip cost and it's yours. I can fix your board set if there are any problems.

Odd thing is im not seeing a rom error its just the adjustment error telling me to close the door and restore factory settings. The door is closed but the game does not seem to see that.

interesting...now the game is quickly skipping thru the message telling me to restore factory settings and taking me to the high score screen..the service switches in the door seem to no longer have any affect. When the game goes to the title screen it will eventually start to generate vertical lines and then reset its self..I guess I can try reseting all the chips and roms on the cpu and rom board?

Progress..I disconected the single red wire running to the top of the cpu board. Booted up the machine and the factory defualts reset allowing the game to play like normal (no infanite lives). Only issue is when I go into the settings it will not let me change anything, so I have to manually coin up and cant change difficulty settings or anything else.

Have you checked your power supply lately?
I'd check the voltages on all legs under load at the test points, and I suspect you'll find something out of tolerance from the book values. Buy a rebuild kit and fix it, and I think you'll be back in normal play.

For the Gold Plated solution, buy replacement pins, burnish the card edge connector, and replace all pins in the connector. That way, you'll take out the most suspect locations for voltage drop. You can also burnish the pins with a small file or nail file, but its tedious work.
