What is the story with the cabinet shapes of these games? On KLOV, the pictures show two different styles of robotron (not counting the cabaret).

I've heard some people state that joust and robotron use the same cabinet, but i've seen that contradicted as well.

On the parts catalog for robotron, it shows the straight edge down version, but I sometimes see the version that cuts back in after the control panel.

any thoughts on this?

My guess for the Robotron cabinets with the cut out was always that if you hung on the joysticks with all of your weight the game might tip over, so they added a bit more support in the front. It looks like the stencils were designed for the cabinet type with the cutaway.

Purely a guess though :)

The vast majority of the Jousts built have the cutback front and the vast majority of the Robotron's built have the straight front. Some Jousts were converted at the factory to Robotron's and vice versa. In fact there have been cabs that had both sets of artwork on them with one covering over the other and discovered when stripped down to restore.
