Robotron: 2084: Hand-Eye Coordination

I am talking about TG settings, not "10". I never have mine set to 10, but I might try it to see how I do compared to those scores you mention. I think the one I scored a million on last weekend was probably set at TG. I am aware that the inventor of Robotron, Eugene Jarvis, says the only way to play the game in on 10, otherwise it is too easy and you can play forever...but I certainly can't play the game that long. I start to wear out physically around 1.5 million. I have no idea how someone managed to play this game for two straight days, but I'd guess they weren't a middle aged man like me.
That's why the TG settings are no good, game goes on forever because the challenge isn't there. If you're good enough to play that far on TG settings, you'll do fine on the 10 setting. Then you've got it floored, adrenaline is pumping and there's no turning back. :)

I played it on difficulty 10 last night for one game and managed about 500,000. Everything is a bit faster and more agressive at this level of difficulty but it was easier than I expected. I suppose with practice and some luck I could do better. So I'd consider myself about average.

I think I prefer the TG settings though.

Jrok difficulty level?

I play robotron on a jrok multi- Williams. Does anyone know what the difficulty level is on the board? I don't think it is a adjustable and I want to know how it compares to level ten. Seems really hard to me.

I think I like Robotron so much because of the difficulty. It's no fun to play for 20 min until a game gets challenging. Robotron starts kicking your butt early on.

hey if you want to improve your hand/eye cooridnation start doing some object juggling, practice with each hand seperately, something like a cup or bottle, pr=actice single flips repeatedly then swap hands. spin catch spin catch until you have a single spin down pat without droppng it. then 1.5 spins, then two spins. if you have an empty coffee cup on the way to the coffee machine, spin your cup, flip your cup. pretty soon you will find that you can even catch the soap if it slips out of your hands in the shower.

I actually "zone out" if you will when playing Robotron. I dont really look at one area rather take the entire screen in and some how the motion of getting through the level just flows. I do focus on brain waves and the tank waves as they can get hectic fast but the other waves just fall into place.

Similar to the way Mod plays from what he typed.

my main thing is to focus on the spheres, especially after the first tank wave. as far as hand eye coordination, i don't really have a good way to explain it, but you just get used to it after a bit of playing. try playing splat and see if that helps. one thing that helps and makes it a little easier in levels from 8-9 on is to blast the shortest way to the edge of the board, and then just go around the board in circles letting the grunts follow you and shooting back at them. gives you a much higher chance of getting through on 1-2 guys.

The one hint that nobody ever seems to give out, is to pulse the fire joystick manually. Learn to "wiggle" the fire stick and you will find that you can fire faster than the automatic rapid fire. This comes in really handy on the waves after the brain waves where there are a gazillion grunts. You can't fire fast enough to clear a path if you just mash the fire stick. Wiggling it and learning to move in one direction and shoot in a different direction are the two primary skills from which Robotron greatness derives. That and having the reflexes of a 20 year old.

Something that really helps develop separate hand control is changing your routine task. If you drive primarily with your right hand, start driving with your left instead, same with eating, switch hands you normally hold your fork in.

I figured that out years ago flying RC stuff, and it works great for games like Robotron.

Also- practice, practice, practice. There is no substitute for time spent learning and playing the game.

Oh, and don't forget to exploit the easter egg on the 1st brain wave!

Boot to Robotron and go into the games test mode, using the JAMMA test and Service switches, it's just like on the original cab and you can see the difficulty level/lives etc.

Same here...

You can't really focus on any specific part of the game.

You have to "sense" the whole screen ...

Robotron is my holy grail and reason I got into this hobby.
It's the first game I ever bought, and still play most
(...I never even knew you could have arcade vids in your house before that ! )

I now have an U/R (had several actually), a cocktail, a multi-Williams,
and am looking for cabaret to complete the set.... ;-)

Robotron rules !
Best ... game.... EVER !

I've seen this technique work for some people but it doesnt work for me. I find that not watching where my guy is and shooting or looking ahead of myself works best.

Wow, those are some very nice scores. What difficulty level did you use when you got them?

As for the pulse technique, I have used that a number of times, usually on the levels where the borders are gone and there are a ton of grunts. It can also help in tight spots.

Robotron = best video game ever.

Factory settings.

Difficulty Level : 5 ( I think )
Free Man every 25,000 points.

I tried difficulty level 10 once, and never broke 300k.

I put perfect 360's on a Robotron and put the game on skill level 10 extra man @ 25k. I managed a score of just above 2,000,000 points one time.

This is one HARD game on level 10!

Great game! The pulsing of the joystick works great once you learn it.

Here's a good one.. I sold my old Multi-Williams to a buddy of mine. His second grader can put up scores of 250K+ on it like it's nothing. To see him go throught the tank and Brain wave is insane. He can talk to you the whole time he plays. His favorite game is Bubbles, I don;t remember what his high score is on that. i know it's way more than I could get on it. Next time I'm over I'll take a picture of the high scores.

Great scores Steph. I only broke 2 million once, but I'm improving. Mine's on factory settings as well.

i keep mine on factory settings, just cause changing them to go farther and just go back is pointless, imo. but going through the tank wave on one guy is fun. i can do that and the mommy/mikey trick on the first brain wave about 1 out of every 5 times. it's a rush when you do it.
